Cache memory, Main memory and Magnetic memory
Memory Hierarchy
As mentioned above, a typical memory hierarchy starts with a small, expensive,
and relatively fast unit, called the cache, followed by a larger, less expensive, and
relatively slow main memory unit. Cache and main memory are built using solid-
state
 Cache memory is a chip-based computer component that makes retrieving data from
the computer's memory more efficient. It acts as a temporary storage area that the
computer's processor can retrieve data from easily.
 Cash memory is a small high-speed memory that is near the CPU
 Main Memory As the name implies, the main memory provides the main storage for
a computer. shows a typical interface between the main memory and the CPU.
Two CPU registers are used to interface the CPU to the main memory. These are
the memory address register (MAR) and the memory data register (MDR). The
MDR is used to hold the data to be stored and/or retrieved in/from the memory
location whose address is held in the MAR.
The main memory address should be divided into three fields: Word, Set, and Tag
 Cache and Main memory are called Primary Memory.
 Magnetic memory is the main way how data is being stored on magnetic medium. It
is how data is stored on devices like hard drive which is the device people use to store
documents audios and videos in their computers.
 Magnetic memories that consist of Hard disk and Tapes are called Secondary
Memory.
memory system having the following specification:
 size of the main memory is 4K blocks.
 size of the cache is 128 blocks.
 the block size is 16 words.
