Materials
Party Hats, birthday print table cloth, and other party planning items.

Beginning

“Since we talked about all of the fun birthday parties that you went to over the summer break, I
thought we’d plan a party.”

Middle:
Children will work together to plan a birthday party using items provided and other items found
in the room.

Extensions:
Ask them questions about the items they are using and whose birthday they are planning. How
old will that person be turning at their birthday?

After summer break, a few students talked about parks, beaches, and pools they went to over

Materials
Empty milk jugs with holes poked in them, 1 large storage bucket

Approaches to Learning. Reflection: Children reflect on their experiences.

Beginning

“Since we talked about playing in the water at the beach and swimming pool, and in the
sprinklers, I thought we could make our own sprinklers today.”

Middle:
Children will (taking turns) fill pre-poked milk jugs with water and watch the water go into the
buckets.

Extensions:
Encourage sensory. Ask questions about how they would feel if they were running through the
sprinklers

“Let’s all sing the itsy bitsy spider and watch the sprinkler wash the spider away. Does anyone
have a spider. Once our spider is washed away, we will meet back at the circle to talk about our day.”

Follow-up Ideas:
Let children take their shoes and socks off and put their feet in the water as if they are on the
side of the pool.

Children learned about Martin Luther King’s fight for freedom.

Materials
Print out of Martin Luther King, A large poster board, paint

Curriculum Content:
Social and Emotional Development. Moral development: Children develop an internal sense of
right and wrong./Cooperative play

Beginning

“This month is Black History month and Martin Luther King fought for all of us to be equal. We
need to be kind to each other and work together. We are going to work together to make a beautiful
painting.”

Middle:
Children will be given a brush and will paint whatever color they want onto the posterboard
together. They will all share one board. We will glue the pre-printed picture of Martin Luther King onto
the board.

Extensions:
Encourage students to collaborate and share space.

Originating Idea
We had to solve problems in the classroom every day last week.

Materials
Pre-printed smiles that reflect different emotions. Crayons. popsicle sticks

Curriculum Content:
Social and Emotional Development. Emotions: Children recognize, label, and regulate their
feelings.

Beginning

“Last week, friends, we had a tough week, full of emotions. Some were happy and some were
sad. I thought we should make faces.”

Middle:
Children will color the difference emoticon printouts. Happy face, Sad face, Silly face, grumpy
face, grump face. Glue the faces to popsicle sticks. Children will pick which face they are feeling
today.

Extensions:
Ask students when do they feel the different emotions. Encourage conversations with
each other.

“We have 5 minutes. We will be going to lunch. Please put your faces in the basket for
laminating and meet me on the red carpet.”

Follow-up Ideas:
We can laminate the faces we made and save them for moments when we need to express
our feelings, but don’t have words yet.

Beginning
“ It is Opening for our favorite team. The Detroit Tigers. I thought we’d learn to play baseball.”

Middle:
Children will hit the ball of the tball pole and shout out a baseball term.

Extensions:
Encourage them to talk about their favorite team. Help them have balance. Ask them questions
about how fast they are.

Middle:
Children will wrap the feathers on a string around the paper towel roll and tape it down.

Extensions:

“In just 5 minutes we will take a nap. After all that hard work we could all use a nap. Please
grab your sack and lay on your cot.”

Middle:
Each child will tell a part of the story and add to the last part their classmate said.

Extensions:
Laugh at funny things, ask what is next in the story. Ask students what they think will happen
at the end. Create anticipation and discussion.

Materials

Beginning
“It is reading month and since we are reading about poets. How about we become
poets?”

Middle:
Children will use letters and numbers they already know to write words. Letters make words
and words make sentences. Sentences make stories. Stories make books. They can also draw
pictures and lines.

Extensions:
Read what they wrote out loud. Ask them what it says.

End
Play the clean up song. “We have 5 minutes to go. Let’s clean up and head back to circle.”

Follow-up Ideas:
Put hats with feathers in it and call it the Poet Hat. Add it to the play area.

Pre-cut apples. Blender. Cinnamon. Sugar.

Mathematics. Measuring: Children measure to describe, compare, and order things.

Beginning
“Remember our recent trip to the apple orchard? I thought it would be nice if we would make
apple sauce.”

Middle:
Children to will count and measure ingredients. Put them into the blender. With assistance
press the button and blend it to make apple sauce.

Extensions:
Ask them about their experience at the apple orchard. Ask them to count as they put
ingredients in. Count as they stir. Count how many seconds they blended.

End
“We have about five minutes for lunch. We get to have apple sauce with our lunch.” Play the
lunch song.

Student will draw pictures of people in their various communities.

people in their family like. Ask what the people they know do for a living. How they help the
community.

Activity Title:__The Menorah____________ Age Group:__7-9_____________

Originating Idea
We got a new Jewish student in our class.

Materials
Popsicle sticks, flame cut outs, shoe box tops, paint, glue

Curriculum Content:
Social Studies. Diversity: Children understand that people have verse characteristics, interests,
and abilities.

Beginning
“Hanukkah, is a Jewish holiday. During this holiday people have a
celebration called the Festival of Lights. They celebrate by lighting a menorah,
eating traditional foods, playing games, and giving gifts. We are going to make
menorahs.”

Middle:
Children will paint the shoebox tops and glue the popsicle sticks to it. Then glue the flame cut
outs to the top of the popsicle sticks to make the menorah.

Extensions:
Ask students what traditions they have at home. Do they celebrate holidays? Ask students to
share their traditions.

End
“We have 5 minutes before we meet back at circle. The moment you finish cleaning up your
area, bunny hop all the way back to circle.”
