EXPOSURE TO LANGUAGE
A child's journey to reading begins with exposure to language. This

can come from parents reading to them, watching television, or

hearing others speak. As they are exposed to language, they begin

to understand that words have meaning and that they can be used

to communicate.

LEARNING
The next step is learning the individual sounds that make up words.

This is typically done through a combination of listening to others

speak and learning to read phonetically. Once children understand

the individual sounds, they can begin to put them together to form

words.

UNDERSTANDING
After children can read individual words, they need to learn how

to put them together to form sentences. This requires

understanding grammar and sentence structure. Once children

can read sentences, they can begin to understand the meaning

of what they are reading.

COMPREHENSION

The final step is learning to read for

comprehension. This means understanding

the author's purpose for writing and being

able to draw inferences from the text. By

understanding what they are reading,

children can begin to see the world around

them in a new way.
