TOPIC – MOTIVATION

Motivation is the persons drive to be a passionate performer in reaching the set goal or
target. There are different roots as to what motivates the person, it can be innate to the
person, or a need to be fulfilled and there are also the motivated by motives like activated by
the situation, social basis and just learned to be motivated. What drives the person to be
motivated can also be called intrinsic that is more of the personal needs of the person and the
extrinsic is being influenced by outside environment. Thus, there are two types of motivation
theories, first is the Content theory where it is explained as what motivates human behaviour
which include the following, Maslow’s Hierarchy of needs where there are the pyramid of
needs that has to be fulfilled each to reach the top portion of fulfilment – Physiological Needs,
Safety Needs, Social Needs , Self-Esteem Needs , and Self-Actualization Needs. Other notable
theories are that of Herzberg’s Two _Factor Theory, The Three Needs Theory of McClelland’s ,
Mayo’s Motivation Theory and the ERG Theory of Alderfer where he group the hierarchy of
needs as to Existence Needs, Relatedness Needs and Growth Needs. The other type of motivate
where it is explained as How motivation works is the Process theories which outlines various
behaviour patterns of individuals in fulfilling their needs. Supporting this theory are that of
Adam’s Equity theory, which accordingly employee gets motivated in the workplace when they
see fair treatment, the expectancy theory of Vroom explains that to be motivated, there are
three factors: Expectancy, instrumentality and Valence, where expectancy is the effort to be
put on the task to achieve the goal, instrumentality is when performance will lead to getting
reward, and valance is weighing the reward as to action to be made. There are number of
theories explaining as to what and how the person is motivated.

Personally, I get motivated in work when I understand the importance of my work, how it
will additional value to the company, and how my task plays a role for management’s decision
making, as it drives me to perform effectively and efficiently. Grateful that the organization I am
connected now, despite of it being a Local grown business provides and makes sure that the
effort and passion we put into our work doesn’t go unnoticed. Yearly we have this called
Performance review where we are graded objectively according to our set KPI/KRA which we
ourselves identified and weighed at the beginning of the year thus making it easy for us to
know if indeed we are meeting it, and from such our salary increases and bonuses are based.
During this pandemic, our daily huddle includes each one of us given the chance to report and
explain what our specific tasks are thus being able to explain to our colleagues how each of us is
adding value to the business .Indeed, being motivated includes a lot of factor, a combination of
monetary and non monetary rewards that would help us feel valued and would as well impact
our personal lives.
