Paper Charts vs. ENC
Chart Collection
Historically, a ship using paper charts would
only have a small stock of charts on board
sufficient for use on the next intended
voyage. The complete world folio of paper
charts was only available in the store and
therefore could not be accessed during the voyage.
By using ECDIS the operator you are able to receive a complete world folio of
charts every three months, which means that the complete collection of ENC
are available on board. The only action that is required is for you to licence
the charts for use.
To Buy a Chart
Previously, if a paper chart was
required the process would be to
visit the store and contact the
chart supplier or agent. Then, the
delivery of any paper charts
ordered was confined to when a
ship was in port.
By using ECDIS, charts can be purchased from all over the world via email or
direct internet connection. The actual charts are already on board the ship
on the Base-DVD. Before you are able to use the ENC chart data and updates,
a licence must be purchased. The licence is simply a small file that allows the
ECDIS to install the selected ENC chart data.
3
Chart Correction and Updates
When using paper charts, a
great number of NtM are
received in port. Comparison
of the changes to different
charts with your stock of
charts on board is then
required. Once that is complete you can start the time consuming process of
chart correction. By using ECDIS, you receive an update CD or DVD when in
port (if requested from your company as additional service) meaning that
only an install update from the CD or DVD is required, or you can request via
e-mail updates for all of the charts installed on your ECDIS or for a selection
of the charts installed.

SENC TADS follow two different update cycles and require regular updates.
Updates are cumulative and contain all updates for the current Base-DVD
that was issued.
Every 3 months a new base DVD of charts is issued and sent on board
the ship/to the office.
On a weekly basis there are updates available for the latest Base-
DVD. These updates are only valid for this Base-DVD.
4
Full License
Every chart licence is linked to the current Base-DVD issued. The licence file
must be renewed periodically. In case of a Base-DVD change occurring during
a licence period, the licence for the chart must be updated. Please note that
updating a licence does not mean to purchase a new licence, it means
requesting the updated licence file.

Dataset
The Dataset is the request that delivers the latest chart edition to you. This
includes the latest updates from the Transas ChartServer. Submitting a
request for the Dataset is required when you do not receive the latest Base-
DVD, your newly requested charts are not available on the latest Base-DVD
or a new chart edition has been issued since you received your last BASE-
DVD.
Note: As the Dataset will include the chart data itself it will induce a higher
amount of internet traffic.

Flow Chart Request the
latest catalogue
This flow chart and the step-by-step guides that follow describe the
necessary steps for chart handling when using Navi-Planner. The
different steps in the flow chart are active hyperlinks, that when Install the latest
catalogue
clicked will lead you to the corresponding step in the step-by-step
guide that follows for an easy navigation.

The easiest way to check whether all charts for the next voyage are installed
Step 2.2: Select Route filtered from the first drop down list and select the
route from the second drop down list.
11
Navi-Planner will now generate a report that will include the following
columns:
Cell Name
Edtition
Update
Issue Date
Status
Expiry Date
Action
The important column will be ‘Action’. This is where you will find the
following entries:
Action Definition
Renew If the cell expiry date is < 30 days from the time of the report execution.
To be ordered If, when running the route filtered report, a cell is identified within the
chart selection corridor (5 nm), but the cell is not currently installed.
The ‘advisory’ nature of this column should be clear to the user as there
may be very small scale charts which intersect a particular route, not all
of which the mariner may consider to be necessary.
No action If the cell expiry date is > 30 days from the time of the report execution.
To be removed If the cell is marked as cancelled or does not appear in the latest
catalogue, then it should be removed so that out of date information is
not maintained within the SENC.
To be installed If a cell is identified within the chart selection corridor and the license
is installed, but not the chart itself.
12
Select the Required Charts
Step 3.1: Press the Charts button from the left panel and choose the Order

Check the Coverage
The coverage area must be checked to ensure a full coverage with ENCs along
the route. ENCs are defined in cells and assigned to specific countries that
need to create the charts. However, some cells are not completely filled
because they reach further territorial waters. In this case additional ENCs
must be ordered to cover these gaps.
Step 5.1: Press the show settings button on the right side of the screen.
Switch to the Chart catalogue tab and check the Show coverage area
checkbox.
The coverage area within the chart borders will be highlighted in red. For
those areas without a coverage you can select charts manually, e.g. by point
on a map.
Step 6.2: Choose the subscription period 3, 6, 9 or 12 month and check the
