Abstract

The Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) were announced as part of the

United Nations’ 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. This was created to
replace the Millennium Development Goals (MDGs). The SDGs build upon the
tenets of its predecessor (MDGs) in addressing many cruel dimensions of
poverty; combatting inequality and injustice more holistically; and widening the
breadth of the environmental targets to tackle climate change. Despite the positive
development of the MDGs, the relatively impact on national development in
Nigeria reinforces the fact that there is need for proper integration of SDGs into
national development plan in Nigeria. This paper therefore examines level of
adoption of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), in Nigeria and
commitment of leadership to the SDGs promise through implementation process.
The paper adopts structural functionalist theory and make use of descriptive
research instrument from the secondary methodology for gathering data. The
paper finds out that the SDGs have come at an opportune time for Nigeria. The
present administration is clearly committed to long-term development and
poverty alleviation through job creation. This paper concluded that with over 170
million people which over 60% of whom are under 30 years of age, fulfilling the
SDGs and taking advantage of the huge human capital resources in Nigeria will
make this country a power-house of development while concluding that the
government have to create an entirely new road map by integrating the SDGs into
national development plan to achieve the desired goals.
