Leaning Journal Task:

Reflect on the concepts of linear and non-linear systems. What concepts (only the
names) did you need to accommodate the concept of linear and non-linear systems in
your mind? What are the simplest linear system and non-linear system you can
imagine? In your day to day, is there any occurring fact that can be interpreted as
linear systems and non-linear systems? What strategy are you using to get the graph of
linear systems and non-linear systems?

The Learning Journal entry should be a minimum of 400 words and not more than 750
words.

“A system of linear equations consists of two or more linear equations made up with
more than one variable and likely more than one equation” (Abramson, 2017, p. 876).
Thus, one of the simplest linear system examples would be:

x+ y=6 – (1) x-2y=3 – (2)

(1)-(2): 3y=3; thus, y=1

Verify with y=1 to (1) and (2).

(1) x+1=6; thus, x=5

(2) x-2*1=3; thus, x=5

Thus, the solution is : (5, 1)

The graph is as follows:

Therefore, the above system of linear equation in two variables is an independent


system, which has exactly one solution pair (5, 1). The point where the two lines
intersect is the only solution (Abramson, 2017, p. 877).

A real-world example for interpreted as linear systems would be: a bakery has a cost of
bread production: C(x)=12x+500 and a revenue function R(x)=14x. What is the break-
even point? With this system linear equations, it is possible to find out the break-even
point or when the company starts to turn a profit (Abramson, 2017, p. 890).

While on the other hand, “a system of nonlinear equations is a system of two or more
equations in two or more variables containing at least one equation that is not linear
(Abramson, 2017, p.903). Thus, one of the simplest linear system examples would be:

y= x +4 (1)

y=x^2+2 (2) x +4

= x^2+2 x^2- x-

2=0

(x-2)(x+1)=0; thus, x=2, x=-1 x=2 to (1).

y=2+4=6; thus, (2, 6) x=-1 to (1).

y=-1+4=3; thus, (-1, 3)

Therefore, the above system of nonlinear equation in two variables has two
solutions, i.e., the line crosses the parabola and intersects it at two points, (2, 6) and
(-1, 3).

A real-world example for interpreted as nonlinear systems would be: the bakery as
mentioned earlier has two revenue functions for each day: C(x)=2x^2-8x+500 and
R(x)=-3x^2+100x+45. With this system nonlinear equations, it is possible to find out
the range of bread per day that they should produce to make a profit (Abramson,
2017, p. 912).

In conclusion, the same as the previous units of functions, many of our daily events
around us could be expressed with linear systems and/or non-linear systems concept.
I usually do not even think and interpret for all phenomena in my daily life
mathematically; however, if I see all those things through an linear systems and/or
non-linear systems filter, many occurring facts indeed could be explained with those
concept.
