● Just a lig ht touch on the lower
screen is enough for the system
to detect your amiibo . Do not
press the amiibo into the screen
or forcefully d rag it across the

Mario & Luigi™: Paper Jam is an


action RPG in which Mario™ and
Luigi™ j oin forces with Mario's
paper alter e go. After Paper
Peach™ and her two-dimensional
subjects fall out of a mysterious
book, it'll be up to you to get
them back to their home world!

10 Starting a Battle

A battle wil l

Preemptive Attacks
If you touch an enemy in one of
the fo llowing ways, you'll
perform a preemptive attack,

before the battle starts:

● Hit an enemy with your
hammer
● Dash into an enemy

As you progress through the


game, you'll gain the ability to
use these special cards in battle
to boost y our abilities or deal
damage to enemies.

16 Status Effects

Certain enemy attacks will inflict


a status effect on Mario or his
companions. To recover from a
status effect, you can either wait
a few turns for it to wear off on
its own or use an item to recover
immediately.

21 Making Character Cards

As you progress through the


game, you'll gain the ability to
use amiibo to obtain in-game
character cards.

without progressing through

These are special cards that you
can use in battle. They can deal
massive damage to your enemies
or e ven fully recover your
characters' HP.

Compatible amiibo
Mario, Luigi, Peach™, Toad™,
Yoshi™, and Bowser™ amiibo are
compatible with this game.
◆ All amiibo of these characters
are compatible regardless of
their specific designs. For
instance, the Mario amiibo
from the Super Mario™ series
and the Mario amiibo from the

Tap the amiib o

need to register an owner and

View Cards
Select this option to look at the
character cards saved to your
amiibo.

Make a Card
Use special ? Cards, obtained in
battle or from certain Toads, to
create characte r cards by
following these steps:
1. Select a ? Card to use.
2. Scan an amiibo to create a
character card.
3. Scan the amiibo again to save
your new character card.
◆ If y ou cancel the saving
process, yo u'll g et the ?
Card you used back.
However, if the saving
proce ss fails for some
reason, the ? Card will be
lost.

Make a Sparkle Card
You can use this option if you
have two amiibo of the same
character. If the two amiibo both
have the same character card
saved to them, it will become a
spark le card and grow more
powerful.

23 Beating Tough Foes

Incre ase Your Leve l


If y ou're finding enemies too
hard, your characters' levels
might be too low. Try fighting
easier enemie s to earn more
EXP, and then face the tougher
one s once your characters'
levels are a bit higher.

Equip Your Best Ge ar


The gear you collect doesn't
have any effect if you don't
equip it. Open the menu and
select Gear, and then make sure
you've go t your best gear
equipped!

Go fo r Preemptive Attacks
If y ou start the battle with a
preemptive attack, it'll be much
easier to win. If you let an
enemy touch you from behind,
though, y ou'll start the battle
with the Trip status effect, so be
careful!

Wisel y
Only Jump attacks can re ach
ene mies in the air, and only
Hammer attack s are effective
against e nemies with spik es.
Make sure to choose the right
attack for the situation.

effects, and you don't even

amiibo in each battle, so take

yourself out of those stick y

Lakitu Arcade
As you progress through the
game, you'll come across a
place called Lakitu Arcade where
you can play minigames. Use the
skills you've honed in battle to
show what you can do in the
following challenges!

Battle Ring
Face off against bosses you've
beaten in the past.

Attac kathon
Play remixed versions of Bros.
Attacks and Trio Attacks to see
how high a score you can get.

can be exchang ed for priz es
in shops.
Digg ing Up Beans
If y ou d ig up certai n
suspicious spots in the
field, you can fin d
beans that will boos t
