Sino-Canadian cooperation agreement signed

Duan Shijie, deputy director of the General Administration of Sport and vice-president of the Chinese Olympic Committee, met with the visiting Canadian Olympic Committee delegation headed by Executive President Chris Rudge at the GASC headquarters in Beijing on April 6, 2005. The two sides signed the sports cooperation agreement between the two NOCs. As Canada was the host country for the 1976 Montreal Olympic Summer Games and the 1988 Calgary Winter Games and will go on to host the 2010 Winter Games, Duan Shijie said, China has a lot to learn from Canada in the organization of the Games. As China is stronger in summer events while Canada prevails in winter sports, he added, there will be lots of opportunities of cooperation for sports circles of the two countries.

Chris Rudge agreed with Duan and said that through his talk with the Chinese NOC secretary-general Gu Yaming before this meeting the two NOCs have found a significant way of cooperation, that is, to set up a special working group for future exchanges and cooperation on Beijing 2008 and Vancouver 2010. He was also happy to note that some new cooperation agreements will be signed soon between the Canadian and Chinese governments. Present at the meeting and signing ceremony were Phil Calvert from the Canadian Embassy to China, Lou Ragagnin, director of the Canadian NOC, and Mark Lowry, director of the Sports Department of the Canadian NOC.
