What is a liquid process without its impellers? Impellers are the bread and
butter of your mixing operation. The purpose of mixing impellers is to

Choosing an impeller is key to ensuring proper function and optimization
of your mixing process. Every Mixer Direct impeller is crafted with 304 or

Shear stress is the force at which your impellers and the mixing substrate move Axial flow impellers can solve two challenges of mixing: solid
against each other at a parallel. This must be taken into account when choosing suspension and stratification. They provide exceptional top to

parts of choosing the right impeller. Pairing the these ratings to your
impeller will minimize complications and optimize your process. Radial flow is often preferred for low-level mixing and applications
in longer tanks, producing rather high shear rates due to their angle
of attack. Most radial flow impellers consist of four to six blades.
Radial flow impellers are efficient in applications like gas/liquid
mixing and dispersion.

LOW-SHEAR
01 This design is intended to create motion with the least amount of
energy possible. These are ideal for applications where your product AXIAL FLOW PATTERN RADIAL FLOW PATTERN
needs occasional turnover to stabilize and prevent separation.

MEDIUM-SHEAR
These are for use in applications that don’t require high degrees of

pulverization but still need to efficiently disperse one material into
another. They provide both shear and movement in a mixture.

HIGH-SHEAR
High shear impellers convert the majority of the energy of the
motor to shear force. These high shear mixing blades excel at

03 quickly breaking down solids and producing a fine grind.

PROPELLERS
The marine propeller is one of the oldest impeller designs still in use
today. Propellers are most recognizable as propulsion components
of boats but have been adapted to fit a variety of mixing

applications due to their small size and high efficiency.

• Marine Propellers are the standard shape and pitch for a

variety of mixing purposes. These are left handed and will pump
downward when rotating clockwise.
• Steep Pitch Marine Propellers allow for additional flow out of

• Right Hand Marine Propellers reverse the traditional
downward flow and move a mixture upward through a tank and
increase shear.

IMPELLERS
High efficiency impellers (HEI) are considered “high efficiency”
because they produce the greatest amount of flow per horsepower Chemicals Soap & Cleansers Ink
in the lineup of mixing blades. With its low-shear design, high
efficiency impellers give your mix motion while using the least
amount of energy possible. They are a cost effective option,
especially when a larger diameter impeller is needed.

Viscosity Rating - up to 5,000 cps.

Available Styles
• Standard HEI with solid blades are most commonly used. They are
popular with flange mount, plate mount, and top entry lines.
• Bolted Blade HEI allow you to extend the overall diameter of your
impeller by bolting on blade attachments.
• High Efficiency Fluid Foil Impellers are used exclusively with our
Side Entry Mixers. The wider paddles increase thrust to power ratio
and generate more pumping power than a standard HEI.

TURBINES Pharmaceuticals Chemicals

The axial flow turbine is a classic medium shear impeller. This

impeller type allows a mixer to break up agglomerations and impart
solids effectively. Each blade is pitched at a 45 degree angle
and manufactured to leave an edge for the liquid to move over, Brewing
creating a localized shear area.

Viscosity Rating - up to 100,000 cps.

Available Styles
• Axial Flow Turbine Impellers are effective in
both high and low viscosity. Available in solid or
bolted blades.
• Reduced Width Axial Flow Turbine
Impellers are designed with a narrower blade
than the traditional axial flow turbine. These
impellers draw less HP while continuing medium
shear duties on high viscosity products.

Radial flow turbines create a flowing pattern that

moves away from the impeller towards the vessels
sides. The flow collides with the sides and moves
in either an upward or downward direction to fill the

• Bolt-On Radial Impellers allow the impeller to increase in
size without durability loss.
• Rushton Disk Turbine Impellers are broad, disk-like
impellers with 6-8 flat vertical blades branching from the disk.
They are commonly used in low to medium duty gas dispersion
applications.

Dispersion blades create the highest shear of all

impeller options. They rotate at high RPMs to quickly
impart solids at a fine grind. Liquids move outward over
the blade to flow over the teeth and break agglomerations
into increasingly smaller particles.
