Question 1
Explain the steps of using a sorbent tube for collecting a sample of gas or vapour
contamination.

Sample name: Turpentine

Sorbent tube: Charcoal

Step by step procedure:

i. Calibration Procedure

1. Use two breaker to break off and retain the ends of the sorbent tube.

2. Locate the arrow printed on the sorbent tube to ensure that points to the pump the direction
of the air flow before inserting it into the tube holder.

3. Insert the open sorbent tube into the black rubber sleeve of a non-adjustable tube holder.

4. Attach second piece of tubing to the open end or inlet of the sorbent tube.

5. Connect the tube holder to the pump inlet.

6. Attach the tubing from the sorbent tube inlet to the calibrator outlet or suction port.
7. Run the pump for 5 minutes after charging to allow the flow to stabilize before calibrating
the flow rate.

8. Set the specified method flow rate on the pump. Enter pump calibration mode and adjust
calibration until the reading displayed on the calibrator remain within 5% of the set flow rate.
Save the calibration adjustment on the pump.

9. Remove the calibration train and keep the low flow tube holder attach to the for use in
collecting the sample in the field.

ii. Sampling Procedure

1. Use two breaker to break off and retain the ends of the sorbent tube that will be used to
collect the sample.

2. Insert the sample tube into the holder tube into the black rubber sleeve of a non-adjustable
tube holder and ensure that the arrow printed on the sorbent tube points toward the direction
of the pump.

3. Thread an appropriately size tube cover onto the holder.

4. Attach the pump on the worker waist and turn it on.

5. Attach the tube holder on the worker breathing zone and run the pump. Ensure that the
tube in a vertical position for efficient collection of gases and vapours

6. Periodically check the sampling progress.

7. Prepare blanks which are sorbent tube and break off the end but do not draw air through
the blanks.

8. When sampling is completed, stop the pump run. Noted the sample stop time and remove
the sampling train from the worker.

9. Unthread the tube cover from the holder and pull the tube from the sleeve.

10. Apply a cap to the end of the tube. Label the sample tube and blank tube. Record the
sampling information.

11. Reinstate the calibration train to verify that the flow calibration is still within 5% of the
method specified flow rate to ensure the sample is valid.
