6.5.1 Factors Impacting Fertility, Pregnancy, and Birth (30 points)

The promotion of reproductive health contributes to the health of women and men and can
positively impact the health of future pregnancies. Maintaining a healthy lifestyle throughout the
reproductive years helps to prevent infant death, premature birth, low birth weight, and many
birth defects. A fetus can be subjected to a number of risk factors in the crucial two to eight
weeks after conception, which is often before a woman realizes that she is pregnant. You will
now complete a research project to explore the factors that impact fertility, pregnancy, and birth
activity.

Below is a list of sample factors that impact fertility, pregnancy, and birth. Feel free to write
about other biological and environmental factors not listed here.
 Tobacco
 Medications
 Street Drugs
 Sexually Transmitted Infections
 Body Weight
 Exercise
 Stress
 Environment
 Alcohol
 Breastfeeding
 Mercury in Fish
 Nutrition
 Immunizations

Directions: Students will research the problems and issues related to fertility in females and
males, describe factors affecting reproductive health in females and males, and analyze how
various lifestyle choices affect health.

Criteria:

Name of factor
Describe the effect of the factor and how it impacts fertility in females and males, pregnancy,
and birth. Please note that not all factors will have impacts on fertility, pregnancy, and birth.
Also, some factors might have more than one effect.
