MASSIVE TRANSFUSION PROTOCOL

Overview
Massive transfusion protocols exist when patients require more than 10 units of PRBC in a 24 hour
period or 5 units of PRBC 1 hour. Patients with massive blood transfusions are at an increased risk for
coagulopathies.

I. Indications for Massive Transfusion Protocol
A. Trauma
B. Hypovolemic shock
C. Hemorrhage
D. Surgery
II. Complications
A. Coagulopathies
B. Electrolyte abnormalities
C. Hypothermia
III. Administration
A. 1:1 or 2:2 ratio
B. 2 units of PRBC: 2 Units of Plasma
C. Replace/Manage electrolytes as needed
