2. COURSE DESCRIPTION This subject is aimed at making students aware of all the implications of material evaluation. The reading assignments, oral presentations, research, and the feedback provided by the tutor and peers will all contribute to enrich the participants experience and guide them in the incorporation of new insights into the material evaluation process . Both the theoretical and the practical components of the course give participants the opportunity to build a theoretical framework as well as strategies and techniques that will enable them to make decisions regarding the evaluation of instructional materia ls for a target group . This course focuses on beliefs about the evaluation of materials . It puts forward and discusses in a practical fashion some ideas on how to analyse EFL coursebooks and other teaching materials in a systematic and meaningful way. Such an analysis is a useful tool in evaluating the potential of a coursebook when matched against the learning objectives of those who might use it. 3. RATIONALE The teaching of English has become compulsory in the context of Colombian educational institutions . This status poses serious challenges such as curriculum, teacher training and development, assessment procedures and methodological approaches. Material evaluation is not the exception. This module concentrates on this neglected area of teacher education and provides participants with theoretical and practical issues so that they have a foundation for selecting the most suitable material for a target group . 4. OBJECTIVE On the completion of this semester, students should be aware of the complexity of the process of evaluating materials . Participants in this course are expected to be able to make decisions on the WHO,WHAT, WHERE,HOW AND WHY in the materials they are evaluating. Specific objectives include: a. Receive and give feedback on final decisions made as result of the process of material evaluation . b. Explore features of good materials for language teaching and learning.

c. Identify and apply models for material evalu ation. 5. METHODOLOGY This course comprises a practical and theoretical component. Thus, through mini lectures, oral presentations, and whole class and small -group discussions students will be introduced to the major aspects material evaluation . Furthermore, students will be applying the knowledge gained during the course by evaluating materials that reflect their understanding of the material evaluation process. Participants are expected to take an active role by participating in class discussions, sharing ideas and resources, and peer -checking materials evaluated. In addition, students are invited to reflect on their performance as material evaluators. 6. CONTENT

Students are expected to arrive on time, prepared with the assignments given during the previous class, and participate actively. Turn off all cell phones before entering class. This class is a community of learners, and everyone should feel comfortable discussing his/her ideas, which means we must always show each other respect.
