Comparing and Contrasting Texts
An effective way to learn and understand different ideas is to compare
and contrast them.

To compare means to find similarities.

To contrast means to find differences.

This helps our brains make sense of the information presented.

Think

Why is comparing and contrasting

helpful? When have you compared
and contrasted two texts or two
items?
Reading and Taking Notes
When you read two or more texts that you want to compare and contrast,
take notes on the details found in each.

A helpful method for taking notes is to use a Venn diagram.

Venn Diagrams
If you are comparing and contrasting three sources, a three-way Venn
diagram can help you organize your information. For instance, you may
need to compare and contrast three different characters in a story.
Turn and Talk

Explain the different areas in this Venn

diagram and what they represent:

happy good students quiet

anxious about
tomorrow
helpful tired

older siblings

funny ten-years old upset
