PFEFEFRACTORY GINNING
Around 1915, pioneers in the steel industry experimented
with patching deteriorated fire-brick linings to lengthen
their service life. Using the Gunite machine, which had
been introduced to the construction industry a few years
before, they shot a mixture of crushed crucibles and fine
dry fire clay into blast furnaces, Bessemer converters,
and ladles. The gun proved its ability to handle dry
materials, wet them with the optimum amount of water at
the nozzle, and convey them with a high impact onto the
lining. The patches were easy to install, long-lasting, and
of great benefit to the producers.
Since the early work in this field, many new materials
and applications have been introduced to the steel
industry and other high-temperature processing
industries, where refractory lining life, cost, and
length of equipment downtime are major
is now common in these industries for the installation of
new refractory linings when equipment is on-line, off-line,
or holding between heats.
The advantages of a gunning program are savings in the
material, in labor to place it, and primarily in the service
life of a lining and the minimum downtime required to
replace or restore it.
MEA! PEERPACTARY LININGS
41) Curved or irregular surfaces as well as flat surfaces can be covered uniformly.
2) Gunned refractories bond exceedingly well to stee! or existing refractory linings.
3) Monolithic gunned linings are more resistant to deterioration.
4) The lining is dense, homogeneous, and impermeable. |
5) Thicknesses from less than 1” up to 18” or more can be applied.
6) Joints formed in successive days or shifts of gunning are as strong as the rest of the material.
Only the optimum water of hydration is added to the material, assuring maximum strength.PATCHING AND MAINTENANCE OF LININGS
Repairs can be made to hot or cold linings.
Regularly scheduled maintenance allows longer life of
original refractory lining, greatly reducing major
scheduled downtime.
Bonding of the patch with the lining is exceptional
because of the force of application.
Aminimum crew is needed, and patching can be done at
any time.
Material can be held in readiness in the gun for use as.
soon as a furnace door is opened.
The following pages show industries in which many
do refractory gunning regularly.Other
in these fields should be aware of the
economic benefits of a gunning program.
Recommendations on choice of gunning mix and
procedures can be made by any refractory
Suppliers. Recommendations for the best choice of gun
for each application will be made gladly by surfex
pneumatic gun company.
PERFORMANCE OF THE PNELIMATIONGIN
- Several thousand guns are in active use on refractory applications.
- Gunning mixes from all refractory suppliers have been handled successfully.
-The “ positive feed” system will feed coarse, fine, dense or lightweight mixes
equally well, Without “slugging” or blockages.
- Excellent hydration of the mix is accomplished with the surfex nozzle.THE STEEL INDUSTRYBy far, the greatest amount of refractory gunning is done in the steel industry. The
individual application are too numerous to list, but where the “gunner” is shown

Large propane spheres have fireproofing completed
‘on the support legs, and the third is being finished.
The lining forms an excellent bond with the steel and
maintenance should not be required for several
decades.
Of particular interest to the petroleum and chemical
industries is the ability to install linings of many
different materials for specialized chemical service
in vessels of all shapes and size, as well as in small-
diameter ducts.
Surfex Pneumatic Guns have been employed for
over 30 years in refineries around the world. They
place insulating material, refractory material, and
fireproofing material inside or outside the process
equipment. Common applications are regenerators,
catalytic reformers, fluidized bed units, heaters,
boilers, crackers, storage vessels of various type,
and associated duct work, stacks, and emission

Savings in downtime are most important in power generating plants. Pneumatinc gunning can lessen
downtime, Since it provides a faster way to install and repair refractory linings used throughout a
plant. Many plants schedule maintenance gunning at regular intervais for boiler, ash pits, coal
bunkers, ducting, precipitators, cyclones, and stacks Other plants in this industry should have a
pneumatic gun to take advantage of its versatility and ease of applying all types of refractory materials
to hot or cold surface of any shape or size
