5.1 Prepositions
Prepositions are functional words that express a relation between two elements in a
phrase. Prepositions express a relation of position or direction, of time, of manner, of an
agent, or other relation. Prepositions are followed by compound prepositions
(consisting) more than one word and phrase prepositions (groups of words used as
nouns, pronoun, or a noun phrase. Prepositions can be simple prepositions (consisting
one word only,
single preposition). They all have function to explain a relationship or show location.
Following are most common types of prepositions:
Preposition of Time referring to time of an event or action like in, at, since, for etc. For
example, in sentence The
Annual Sports Day shall be held on this Friday", on is a preposition of time.

Preposition of Position referring to position of an object like in, inside, within etc. In
sentence Her cat likes to sit
Preposition of Movement reflecting movement of an object like into, up, down, through
etc. These are used to
show movement from one place to another and most often used with verbs of motion
and are found after th verb. In sentence He's walking along the path, along is a
preposition of movement.
Preposition of Agency refers to the causal relationship between a noun and an action like
the book is written by Mark Twaine. In this sentence by is a preposition of agency.
