i METHODS OF SAMPLING AND TESTING
‘This Eleventh Eeition of Transportation Materials is published in two parts. one dealing with
specifications for materials and the cond with methods of esting and specifications fr testing equip
‘tent, Part I covering methods of testing and spectfcatons for testing equipment, contains 193 Test
‘Methods, 12 mote than the 1971 edition: Revises have been made ita mutuber ofthe test methods
shown inthe las edition and a few fst methods have Been delete.
[As stated in previous editions, the Associaton has followed the policy of indicating. for naturally oc
cortng materials text init wbich may be caeidered the most iberal that may safely be allowed. Ths
Ins been done with the understanding that whete Righer grade materials are locally avalable, more
Field equisements should be iacred, This policy hat heen followed in recognition oF the necessity of
fdlusting test requiremonts to meet local demands. However the recommended test limits covering
/nanafactured progucts such as cement, see, asphalt, may be comidere as definite requirements
tor the materiats for speifie ures and Under specie conditions, a not Subject o mediation inthe
same sense as would Jusly madiieations in speciiatins for naturally curring materials.
‘Man ofthese specifications agree with those ofthe American Society fr Testing and Materials. n
ailleasc where the Association and Society standards are technically identical, relerence tothe ASTM
‘esiation namaber shown in the heading ofthe specification, Where the Association has adopted an
ASTM standan, the courtesy of the Society In permuting publication ofthe standard is appreciate.
‘General juriadiction over Assclation standards ia tis field is a function of the Suacomimittee on
Materials, which has members representing each of the 50 Sates the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico,
the District of Columb, aod the United States Department of Transportation. A number af specifica
‘ions have boen included inthis poblisstion a the request of the AASHTO Subcommittee on Bridges
fad Structures, Mr.C, K, Prous, Materials and Revesteh Engineer forthe Minnesots Deparcment of
Highways: has divested the development of new specifications and relsions contained inthis volume, as
«haieman of the Subcormmiice on Materials. Mr. Preus retired as chuicman of the Sabeommittes in
‘Augest 1973 and he has been replaced by Mr, Thomas D. Moreland of Georgia,
Intertn Specifications are uswaly published etch yea, and a revised edition of this book is published
ren four yours. The Interim Specifications have the satoe satus ax standar’s of the american
‘Assaciation of State Highway and Transportation Ofiils, but are tentative revisions approved by at
Teas two-thinds of the Subcommittee on Materia. These revisions are voted on by the Assocation
Member Departments prior tothe publication of each new edition ofthis ook, ad if approved by at
Teaat two-thirds ofthe members, they are included in the new edition as standards of the Association
Criticisms of thete speciiations are welcome and should be addrested to the Executive Directo,
