Positive Psychology:
Positive psychology is defined as the scientific study of human strengths and virtues.
Optimism
Social support
Self esteem
Active coping skills.
30 years of research has been conducted in order to claim that health and positive psychology are
interrelated and help in creating a positive social environment and improve well being through
out the society. Positive psychology has also been used as an aid in treating depression.
The impact of community on mental health and subjective well-being of the residents:
Mental health is a complex thing and the social environment one lives in is one of the many
factors that affect the mental health of a person. There are many factors that have in impact on
the mental health and the subjective well being of a person. According to a study, people who
had the highest level of subjective well being had satisfying social lives. Some if the things that
impact the mental health and wellbeing are:
Even though the community can have a negative impact on a person’s life and might ruin their
life, but it can make one’s life as well. Subjective wellbeing depends on the community as well
and can have the above mentioned benefits.
Role of religion in the mental health and subjective well-being of the people:
Religion and spirituality have an incredibly positive impact on the mental health of a person,
even though the results have been proved different. According to some reports, people who have
higher levels of spirituality and religion in their lives are more optimist and tend to have a better
mental health than the people who are not very religiously active. Religious involvement benefits
a person’s individual and social life as well. Praying helps a person in expressing gratitude, yoga
and meditating helps them in expressing love, hope and forgiveness. These points emphasize the
role of religiosity in one’s life.
Legal issues: Legal issues include therapists not having a proper license to practice positive
psychology.
Professional issues: Professional issues include not providing the client a safe space,
misusing their trust, and giving out therapy details without their permission and messing up
with their mental health even more.
Unprepared for tough times: Positive psychology makes a person so optimist that
he only focuses the positive things. This makes them unprepared for the negative
things that happen in a person’s life.
Bad for one’s health: Being fussy and critical of one’s health makes them care for
their health kore than one being overly optimist.
Can be a cause of poor mental health: At its extreme, positivity can be truly
unhealthy. In fact, other research by June Gruber finds that people who consistently
report extreme degrees of happiness tend to be less creative, engage in more risky
behavior and are at greater risk for mental illness.
