CLASSICAL LITERARY CANONS

GENERAL ASPECTS OF CLASSICAL LITERATURE

Classical literature is essentially characterized by the ideal of beauty and perfection of

great men, by the search for balance and harmony and the presentation of beautiful myths,
where the gods and heroes were immortal and very powerful and resembled humans,
because they shared some virtues and defects such as jealousy, envy, resentment, among
others. The Greek gods were the inspiration for Greek literary productions, a fact that was
later assumed by the Romans.

CLASSICAL LITERARY CANON

The literary canon is a select and very brief list of classic works, it is distinguished like
this, for being writings that have been read with interest for centuries, although many see
them as old-fashioned and ancient. This selection of works is maintained generation after
generation, because it has social prestige and is also considered a fundamental element
for education. Then we can say that to teach literature it is inevitable to establish a canon,
in which aesthetic taste and pedagogical need are taken into account, since they are
considered as an inescapable reference of the culture itself and universal.

NATIONAL CLASSICAL LITERARY CANONS

In the first instance we must emphasize Latin American literature, which considers the
canon as an artistic movement that has guidelines, principles, and precepts, which govern
human behavior. In this area, we, as readers, play an essential role, since we are the ones
who must obtain knowledge of a literary cultural capacity, of locating ourselves perfectly
in our own reality and realizing which are the books that must be considered inevitable
in our literary world.
In this sense, culture became the most important space to understand the reality of our
country, without a doubt, it is she who will allow the deep reflection that will guide us to
become aware of our reality. For this reason, the canon, being a collection of works
chosen by a specialized literary critic, become true examples of reading our historical and
sociocultural context.
