• Paolo Soleri (21 June 1919 - 9 April
2013) was an Italian architect. He established the educational
Cosanti Foundation and Arcosanti.
Through his work as an architect, urban designer, artist, craftsman,
and philosopher
Paolo Soleri explored the countless possibilities of human
aspiration.
One outstanding endeavor is
Arcosanti, an urban laboratory, constructed in the Arizona high
desert.
It attempts to test and demonstrate an alternative human habitat
which is greatly needed in this increasingly perplexing world.

ARCOLOGY
×He built an experimental city in Arizona, called Arcosanti.
×With his Arcosanti workshops and classes, Soleri
popularized the idea of "arcology," a cross between
architecture and ecology.
×The idea was that cities should reflect both human
aspirations as well as the shape and needs of the Earth's
environment

ARCOSANTI
The Arcosanti Project is developed by the Cosanti Founda-tion, a non-
profit educational organization dedicated to the investigation of new
urban patterns. The project addresses the environmental, social and
cultural issues faced by an increasingly urbanizing and global
civilization. Arcosanti hopes to develop and demonstrate a
sustainable urban system on marginal land in the American
southwest.
As an urban laboratory, Arcosanti focuses on innovative de-sign,
community, and environmental accountability.

The goal is to actively pursue lean alternatives to urban
sprawl based on Paolo Soleri's theory of compact city
design, Arcology (architecture + ecology).
Built by over 7,000 volunteers since the commencement of
the project in 1970, Arcosanti provides various mixed-use
buildings and public spaces where people live, work,
visit, and participate in educational and cultural
programs.
