Experiment No. 2: A Narrative Report

ACCURACY & PRECISION are the words that best described the second experimentation. Honestly, it was the first time of the group to see a vernier caliper and used it in an actual measurement. Yuup! You heard it. It focuses on the function of a vernier caliper. When Prof. Bheim announced that we would have an experiment, everyone was like whooah! Are you kidding sir? We didn't even remembered that you notified us to bring the lab manual. Anyhow, the schedule must be followed. Fortunately, two of our members had their book. For I know what is the initial step in doing an experiment, I alone, went to the 'borrowing place' of physics materials to pick up some forms for borrowing instruments. I brought forms for each groups. Obviously, we are the first who went to borrow all of the tools needed. From then, the in-charge of giving the materials uttered Bakit ngayon lang kayo gumagawa nito? Di ba matagal na 'to? And my member (Marianito) replied Busy po kasi kami sa mga lectures, nagfocus po kami sa prelim....'' The first is the numero uno. We lead the experiment among other groups so that we can finished it earlier than others do. Maverick give me the dimensions of the wooden block using the meter stick 'OK'....I recorded the data and went on in measuring via the vernier caliper. Again, I recorded the information needed to fill up the table on the lab manual. As we scan the procedures, they all said what the h*ck? How can you possibly measure the mass of a coin using the vernier caliper? (as stated on the table-designated by letter M. We actually believed that M stands for mass, yet, only realizing a few minutes later that it stands for main). Me and Marianito ask our instructor on how to use the vernier caliper PROPERLY. Ahhh, ganun pala . So while I was recording the data others were watching others weren't. Jester and Stephen Vincent were trying to understand what we are doing. Maverick, Harold and Ivan were 50% listening while quarreling about the use of a platform balance that we didn't actually brought in to play. And Mark Manuel was running around and being chased by our classmates contrary to what he was doing few minutes earlier where he was copying the data from us to his book. We first calipered the 1 peso and arrived to the equality between our actual reading and standard value. Same with the 10 pesos coin, we hit the standard value. However, computations were involved when we measured the 5 pesos and 25 cents coins. Using the main(M), vernier(V), and least count (LC=0.05mm), I calculated for our actual reading via M + V(LC) formula given on the book. Problem comes when we realized that our measurement on the wooden block wasn't right using the vernier caliper. Therefore, we came back with the first table and do some computations, then finally arrived to the %error. Another dilemma that we faced was in the third table. Everyone was confused on how to measure the inner and outer radius of the metal cylinder. There are blaming there, blaming

here, and blaming everywhere about the wrong usage of the vernier caliper. So I said measure the thickness, ergo, I can figure out the actual volume of that rusty metal. Problem solved! We didn't do the displacement for sir Llona advised us that we will be getting wet after. And we are already done and ready to go (joke). The first who borrowed is also the first in returning the tools. And that's us. I comprehended a lot of learning about the function of a vernier caliper and I'm sure my members also did. All we can say is we are number one this time.
