The Pattern
The Dover Cardigan is a pattern that is knitted from the bottom up. You’ll knit the back,
both front panels and the sleeves separately and eventually knit the neck rib after the
sweater is assembled. There are two kind of cables, but both are easy to knit; make sure
you have a cable needle to knit them. You’ll need 4 mm size needles for the body and
the sleeves. For the ribbing on the body and the sleeves you’ll need 3 mm needles. For
the ribbing on the neckline, you’ll need 3mm 100cm circular needles. After the neckline Cable 4 Back: Slip 2 stitches on the

Next, continue knitting the pattern, while at the same time
shaping the V-Neck. At the end of the RS row, knit the third and
second to last stitch together a total of 28 (31) 32 times. There
are now 46 (54) 68 stitches left on the needle. Knit 4 rows. Then,
at the end of the RS row, increase a stitch between the second
to last and last stitch on the needle for a total of 4 rows. There
will be 50 (58) 72 stitches on the needle. The piece should
measure 55 (60) 63 cm in total. Bind the piece off with a normal
bind-off, but make sure it’s not too tight.
The Right Front
Start with the 3 mm needles and cast on 74 (85) 100 stitches
with a long-tail cast on. The rst stitch and the last stitch are
the edge stitches, and they are always knitted. Knit 7 cm of (1k,
1p) rib. Make sure to end the rib on the WS, as the pattern starts
on the RS. Switch to the 4 mm needles and start with the
pattern.

shaping the V-Neck. At the beginning of the RS row, SSK the
second and third stitch together a total of 28 (31) 32 times.
There are now 46 (54) 68 stitches left on the needle. Knit 4 rows.
Then, at the beginning of the RS row, increase a stitch between
the first and second stitch on the needle for a total of 4 rows.

1p) rib. Make sure to end the rib on the WS, as the pattern starts
on the RS. Switch to the 4 mm needles and start with the
pattern.

Continue this pattern until the piece measures 55 cm (60 cm) 63
cm in total, including the rib. Make sure your back piece is the
same height as the front pieces. (If you wish to change the
length of the cardigan, you can do so at this stage)
Bind the piece off with a normal bind-off, but make sure it’s not
too tight.
The Sleeves
Start with the 3 mm needles and cast on 84 (92) 102 stitches
with a long-tail cast on. The rst stitch and the last stitch are
the edge stitches, and they are always knitted. Knit 7 cm of (1k,
1p) rib. Make sure to end the rib on the WS, as the pattern starts
on the RS. Switch to the 4 mm needles and start with the
pattern.
The pattern goes as follows:
RS: Knit the edge stitch — knit 15 (19) 24 stitches of the Double
Moss Stitch*** — 1p, 2k, 4p, 2k, 1p — knit 8 stitches of Cable
2** — 1p, 2k, 1p — knit 8 stitches of Cable 1* — 1p, 2k, 1p —

At the same time increase a stitch at both the second and the
second to last stitch at particular rows. These increases add
stitches to the Double Moss Stitch areas and therefore the
numbers of these areas will change. The rest of the pattern will
stay the same.
Increase 2 stitches in total at the beginning and end of these
rows: Row 3 — 7 — 11 — 15 — 21 — 27 — 33 — 39 — 45 — 51
You will have increased 20 stitches in total, 10 stitches on each
side of the sleeve. There will be 104 (112) 122 stitches on the
needles.
After these increases the pattern will go as followed:
RS: Knit the edge stitch — knit 25 (29) 34 stitches of the Double
Moss Stitch*** — 1p, 2k, 4p, 2k, 1p — knit 8 stitches of Cable
2** — 1p, 2k, 1p — knit 8 stitches of Cable 1* — 1p, 2k, 1p —
knit 8 stitches of Cable 2 ** — 1p, 2k, 4p, 2k, 1p — knit 25 (29)
34 stitches of the Double Moss Stitch*** — knit the edge stitch.
WS: Knit the stitches as they are on the needles.
Knit the pattern until the sleeve measures 44,5 (47) 48 cm in
total, including the rib. (You can change the length of the sleeve
at this stage. Increase or decrease the length according to your
wishes.) Bind off the sleeve with a normal bind-off, but make
sure it’s not too tight. Repeat the pattern for the second sleeve.

 The Construction
With all the pieces knitted, block them.
Start with a sleeve and put a stitch marker in the middle of the
sleeve, on the bind-off edge. Seam the sleeve together from the
bottom up, using the Mattress Stitch. Seam between the edge
stitches and the Double Moss stitches. This way, the edge
stitches will be completely hidden. Do the same with the other
sleeve.
Take the back piece and both the front pieces. Seam the
shoulder edges together, starting at the outer edge and work
your way inward. Your cardigan is only held together at the
shoulders at this point.
Take a sleeve and line up the stitch marker you’ve put in the
middle of it with the shoulder seam. Next, seam the sleeve onto
your cardigan (the first half of the sleeve to the back piece and
the second half of the sleeve to the front piece or vice versa).
Use this seaming pattern for the best result: 1 sleeve stitch — 1
shoulder stitch — 2 sleeve stitches — 1 shoulder stitch.
Do the same with the other sleeve.
At last, seam the side edges of the back and the front pieces
together from the bottom up. Seam between the edge stitches
and the Double Moss stitches. This way, the edge stitches will
be completely hidden. Your cardigan should be in one piece
now and you can weave in all ends.
The Neckline
Use the 3 mm and pick up one stitch for every row on the left
side on the cardigan, one stitch for every stitch across the back
and one stitch for every row on the right side.
The neckline will be 18 rows / 4 cm of (1k, 1p) rib in total and
the buttonholes will need to be knitted halfway. On the 9th row
(the RS), knit the buttonholes using a regular bind-off. For the 28
mm buttons, you’ll need to bind of 5 stitches for each button.
Make sure that the lowest button will be at least 1 cm above the
beginning of the cardigan and that the highest button will be at
least 1 cm beneath the start of the V-neck. Divide the rest of the
buttonholes evenly between the highest and the lowest
buttonhole.
Then on the 10th row (the WS), finish the buttonholes with
casting 5 stitches, using the single cast-on, on the gaps of the
buttonholes. Complete knitting the (1k, 1p) rib and use the
Italian bind-off to bind off the rib. Make sure you bind off the
neckline tightly. To finish your cardigan, center the buttons on
the buttonholes and sew them onto the neckline. Weave in all
ends.
