Foreword

This Part of BS 6571 has been prepared under the direction of the Road
Engineering Standards Policy Committee and is a revision of BS 6571-1:1985
which is withdrawn.
In this revision amendments have been made throughout the standard with the
aim of improving the accuracy and performance of the meters. Amendments have
also been necessary to accord with changes in legislation.
Other Parts of this standard are as follows:
— Part 2: Specification for electrically powered parking meters;
— Part 3: Specification for pay and display parking equipment;
— Part 4: Specification for barrier type parking control equipment1);
— Part 5: Guide to the requirements for non-coin operated apparatus for use
with parking control equipment1).
Further Parts are under consideration.
Whilst it is not within the scope of this standard attention is drawn to the
guidance of the Design Council on the aesthetic qualities of street furniture.
A British Standard does not purport to include all the necessary provisions of a
contract. Users of British Standards are responsible for their correct application.
Compliance with a British Standard does not of itself confer immunity
from legal obligations.

Summary of pages
This document comprises a front cover, an inside front cover, pages i and ii,
pages 1 to 6, an inside back cover and a back cover.
This standard has been updated (see copyright date) and may have had
amendments incorporated. This will be indicated in the amendment table on the

2) Marking BS 6571-1:1989 on or in relation to a product represents a manufacturer’s declaration of conformity, i.e. a claim by or
on behalf of the manufacturer that the product meets the requirements of the standard. The accuracy of the claim is therefore
solely the responsibility of the person making the claim. Such a declaration is not to be confused with third party certification of
conformity, which may also be desirable.

A type of lock shall be used where keys and blanks

can only be obtained from the manufacturer.
NOTE The precise system of locking is not specified in this
standard but should be agreed between the purchaser and the
manufacturer. In this connection, attention is drawn to the
possible use of selected key systems.
7.3 Windows
Windows shall be manufactured either from
toughened safety glass complying with BS 857 or
from plastics safety glazing material complying
with the properties of categories C or G in clause 4
of BS AU 182:1982.
NOTE The provision of windows allowing the last coin inserted
to be visible may be provided.
7.4 Coin box capacity and slot size
The meter coin box, when fitted into the meter case
and filled via a meter mechanism
with 5p or 10p coins or with these coins in any
combination, shall hold not less than £5 sterling.
NOTE 1 A slave meter mechanism may be used to test this
requirement.
NOTE 2 It is permissible for the size of slot to be set so as to
preclude the entry of undesirable coins.

8 Environmental conditions
8.1 Weathering
The meter shall comply with the requirements for
IPX3 when classified in accordance with
BS 5490:1977.
NOTE This classification relates to the degree of protection
provided by the case and requires that water falling as a spray at
an angle of up to 60° from the vertical has no harmful effect on
the mechanism.
8.2 Temperature
The meter shall comply with this standard over a
temperature range of – 10 °C to + 45 °C
(see clause 13).
8.3 Damp heat
The meter shall comply with this standard at a
relative humidity of 80 % at an ambient
temperature of 45 °C (see clause 13).
8.4 Vibration
The meter shall continue to comply with this
standard after being vibrated over a frequency
range of 10 Hz to 150 Hz at a constant 0.5gn
(see clause 13).
