Long and Short Vowel

There is a great difference in how Filipinos and Americans pronounce vowels. In Filipino, we
read the vowels as it is but in the English language, they have 3 classifications of the vowel
sound. These are short vowels, long vowels and diphthongs.
Short Vowels
If the sound of the vowel is the same as the name itself in the Filipino language, it is a short
vowel.

Long Vowels
The long vowel sound is the same as the name of the vowel itself in English language.
As in:
• Long A sound is AY as in bake.
• Long E sound is EE an in greet.
• Long I sound is AHY as in bike.
• Long O sound is OH as in clone.
• Long U sound is YOO as in human or OO as in goose.
