In the 1600’s when the Spanish moved into what later was to become the southwestern United
States, they encountered the ancestors of the modern-day Pueblo, Hopi, and Zuni peoples. These
ancestors, known variously as the Basket Makers, the Anasazi, or the Ancient Ones, had lived in the
area for at least 2,000 years. They were an advanced agricultural people who used irrigation to help
grow their crops.
The Anasazi lived in houses constructed of adobe and wood. Anasazi houses were originally
built in pits and were entered from the roof. But around the year 700 A.D., the Anasazi began to build
their homes above ground and join them together into rambling multistoried complexes, which the
Spanish called pueblos or villages. Separate subterranean rooms in these pueblos – known as kivas or
chapels – were set aside for religious ceremonials. Each kiva had a fire pit and a hole that was believed
to lead to the underworld. The largest pueblos had five stories and more than 800 rooms.
The Anasazi family was matrilinear, that is, descent was traced through the female. The holy
possessions of the family were under the control of the oldest female, but the ritual ceremonies were
conducted by her brother or son. Women owned the rooms in the pueblo and the crops, once they were
harvested. While still growing, crops belonged to the man who, in contrast to most other Native

The BigBelly is a solar (47)______ trash can. About 50 of them have been installed in different
locations around the city of Boston. The BigBelly compacts its contents automatically and only needs
to be emptied once or twice a day. Normal trash cans usually need to be emptied more than fifteen times

Green technology, also known as CleanTech, can help to conserve the natural environment and

Fossils
Have you ever seen a fossil in rocks buried in the earth? It’s like finding a treasure. Fossils are remains of
plants and animals that lived a very long time ago. For example, any dinosaur fossil that is found is at least 65 million
years old.
Fossils tell stories about the past. Many of these stories are surprising. For example, fossils of sea life have
been found as high up as the top of Mount Everest. This means that at one point, the rocks in Mt. Everest were
probably under water. Fossils from plants in the rain forest have been buried deep in the ice of the South Pole.
The oldest known fossil is a tiny bacterium. These fossils have been found in Southern Africa. These fossils
are said to be as old as 3.5 billion years.
How are fossils formed? Bones and plant remains begin to decay with time. But sometimes, the bones and
plant remains are covered with mud or sand. This makes it possible for the soft parts to decay, while the harder parts
(such as wood, bones, and teeth) last a lot longer. Eventually, these hard parts become hardened or petrified.

Born on June 30, 1085 in Baltimore, Maryland, to Fred and Debbie Phelps, the youngest of three
children, Michael Phelps and his sisters grew up in the neighborhood of Rodger Forge. His father, Fred, a
former all-rounded athlete, was a state trooper and his mother Debbie was a middle-school principal. When
Phelps’s parents divorced in 1994, he and his siblings lived with their mother, with whom Michael grew very
close. Even at the age of 7, Phelps was still a little scared to put head under water, so his instructors allowed
him to float around on his back. Not surprisingly, despite the fact that later he is very good at butterfly
swimming, the first stroke he mastered was not the easily-practiced breaststroke but the backstroke.
At the age of 15, Phelps became the youngest American male swimmer to compete at an Olympic
Games in 68 years. While he didn't win any medals at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia, he
would soon become a major force in competitive swimming.
In the spring of 2001, Phelps set the world record in the 200-meter butterfly, becoming the youngest
male swimmer in history at the age of 15 years and 9 months. At the 2001 World Championships in Japan,
he then broke his own record with a time of 1:54:58, earning his first international medal. In 2002, Phelps
continued to establish several records including the 100-meter butterfly and the 200-meter individual medley.
The following year, at the same event, he broke his own world record in the 400-meter individual medley
with a time of 4:09.09.
After the London Olympics in 2012, Phelps announced he was retiring from his sport However, at the
2016 Olympic Games, he came out of retirement and returned to professional competition. This was also the
event which he won one silver and five gold medals, becoming the oldest individual gold medalist in Olympic
swimming history, as well as the first swimmer to win four consecutive gold medals in the same event, the
200-meter individual medley.

Advertising helps people recognize a particular brand, persuades them to try it, and tries to keep them
loyal to it. Brand loyalty is perhaps the most important goal of consumer advertising. Whether they produce
cars, canned foods or cosmetics, manufacturers want their customers to make repeated purchases. The quality
of the product will encourage this, of course, but so, too, will affect advertising.
Advertising relies on the techniques of market research to identify potential users of a product. Are
they homemakers or professional people? Are they young or old? Are they city dwellers or country dwellers?
Such questions have a bearing on where and when ads should be placed. By studying readership breakdowns
for newspapers and magazines as well as television ratings and other statistics, an advertising agency can
decide on the best way of reaching potential buyers. Detailed research and marketing expertise are essential
today when advertising budgets can run into thousands of millions of dollars.

Advertising is a fast-paced, high-pressure industry. There is a constant need for creative ideas that will
establish a personality for a product in the public's mind. Current developments in advertising increase the
need for talented workers.
In the past, the majority of advertising was aimed at the traditional white family - breadwinner father,
non- working mother, and two children. Research now reveals that only about 6 percent of American
households fit this stereotype. Instead, society is fragmented into many groups, with working mothers, single
people and older people on the rise. To be most successful, advertising must identify a particular segment
and aim its message toward that group.
Advertising is also making use of new technologies. Computer graphics are used to grab the attention
of consumers and to help them see products in a new light. The use of computer graphics in a commercial
for canned goods, for instance, gave a new image to the tin can.

Read the following passage and mark the letter A, B, C, or D on your answer sheet to
indicate the correct answer to each of the questions.
A Japanese construction company plans to create a huge independent city-state, akin to the
legendary Atlantis, in the middle of the Pacific Ocean. The city, dubbed “Marinnation”, would
have about one million inhabitants, two airports, and possibly even a space port. Marinnation,
if built, would be a separate country but could serve as a home for international organisations
such as the United Nations and the World Bank.
Aside from the many political and social problems that would have to be solved, the
engineering task envisaged is monumental. The initial stage requires the building of a circular
dam eighteen miles in diameter attached to the sea bed in a relatively shallow place in
international waters. Then, several hundred powerful pumps, operating for more than a year,
would suck out the sea water from within the dam. When empty and dry, the area would have a
city constructed on it. The actual land would be about 300 feet below the sea level. According
to designers, the hardest task from an engineering point of view would be to ensure that the
dam is leak proof and earthquake proof.
If all goes well, it is hoped that Marinnation could be ready for habitation at the end of the
second decade of the twenty-first century. Whether anyone would want to live in such an
isolated and artificial community, however, will remain an open question until that time.
