Gaining stakeholders permission to operate through Stakeholders Engagement-- Environmental Social Risk Impact
Assessment in mining/quarry [2019]
The process of an ESMP especially the ESRIA, ESIA or EIA is to provide and
identify all risk and potential impact In the technical, environmental and social
aspect of the project that will prevent it's from attaining project goals, in
controlling the social risk and impacts communication, participation and
interaction is key to obtaining Social Stakeholders approval or permission to
Operate, this is as all project is going to have impacts and level of impact to which
stakeholders are willing to accept in their different area of Influence AOI vary for
individual stakeholders, which results in them to seeking the issuance of permits
delaying/ pausing or stopping work, observe sit-in or protest, destroy property or
become violent.
The stakeholders of a project will vary depending on the details of the project.
They may include local communities, national and local authorities, neighboring
projects, and nongovernmental organizations, “stakeholder” refers to individuals or
groups who are affected or likely to be affected by the project (project-affected
parties); and may have an interest in the project (other interested parties).
The process of stakeholder engagement should involve the following,
(i) stakeholder identification and analysis; (ii) planning how the engagement with
stakeholders will take place; (iii) disclosure of information; (iv) consultation with
stakeholders; (v) addressing and responding to grievances; and (vi) reporting to
stakeholders
This paper aims to explain how Stakeholders' approval can be gotten for big and
complicated projects, through in-depth provision and dissection into the concept/
positions of stakeholders and the importance of Stakeholders' permission to operate.
