Environmental technology “made in Austria” Austria’s environmental technology industry is among the world’s most innovative green-tech industries today. It is growing at a faster rate than the entire Austrian economy. In Austria, the turnover earned by green-tech enterprises, excluding service enterprises, has quintupled since 1993. In 2011, a turnover of over 8 billion euros was achieved. Of this, approximately 6 billion euros were generated from exports. During the 2007-2011 period, the sales figures of this branch increased by 8% annually, while those of the provision sector rose by 6.5%. With these figures, the environmental technology industry continues to rank markedly above the average of the product industry. The export volume of Austria’s environmental technology industry increased by 2 billion euros between 2007 and 2011 - an average annual growth of 11%. Essentially, exports have seen two crucial developments since 2007: first, the share of exports in the overall revenue has risen and, secondly, providers are more active on non- European markets. To reinforce this positive trend of turnover and employment growth in the environmental technology sector in the long term, both the “Master Plan for Environmental Technologies” and the “Master Plan for Green Jobs” were prepared. The result is a true success; Austria is active in a high number of different fields of environmental technology, and we as a country are represented in every important branch of this field . Further, compared to the product industry, the green-tech industry sees above-average research intensity and a very high share of innovative companies (approx. 80%). Comprehensive training and further training programmes (such as \v) raise the level of qualification in environmental technology and give the sector a competitive edge. In addition, the “Export Initiative Environmental Technology” of the Federal Ministry and the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber is heading in this direction. This helps to open up new markets and enhance the visibility of Austrian environmental technologies on an international level. Austria Sustainability What is sustainability? Sustainability consists of fulfilling the needs of current generations without compromising the needs of future generations, while ensuring a balance between economic growth, environmental care and social well-being. What is Australia ranked in sustainability? Australia is overall fifth with 33 institutions. Australia outperforms these top four countries: 36 per cent of Australian universities rank in the top 100 compared to 22 per cent for the United States and 29 per cent for the United Kingdom. Is Australia good at being sustainable? Sustainable management of the natural environment is essential to support the health and health equity of individuals and communities, and is, therefore, a necessary focus for public health efforts. Australia currently ranks highly in terms of environmental performance globally Does Australia have sustainability? d the role of sustainable development in ensuring the well-being of the country and its people. Government legislation, regulation and policy already drives us towards many of the environmental, social and economic outcomes enshrined in the SDGs. Austria has a leading international position in fields such as clean energy technologies, water management and waste management as well as eco- efficient construction and exhibits a dynamic development. Sales revenue with eco-innovations have quadrupled in the last 20 years and therefore increased by 18.6 per cent since 2011. The Austrian environmental industry generated a turnover of about 10 billion euros in 2015, 72 percent of which stem from exports. Austria is aware of the importance of the green-tech industry for exports and supports international projects with numerous programs. Climate action Austria aims to achieve climate neutrality by 2040. To this end, we are determined to: * implement an eco-social tax reform; * draw up a mobility-master-plan for 2030; * introduce an affordable, nationwide annual pass for public transport; * present a plan for phasing-out oil, coal and fossil natural gas for room heating and * massively increase renewable energy. Digitalisation is an Austrian priority, also implementing the 2030 Agenda: * In order to allow the partake of everyone, expansion and promotion of broadband and 5G, digital skills and applications, digitalisation in the health sector and in citizen-orientated public services; ¢ Use of digitalisation to cut resources and energy consumption and reduce CO2-emissions; * Holistic approach for sustainable use of digital transformation, e.g. smart cities; ¢ Use of digitalisation in communication and management of crises and pandemics. The key principles of organic farming: + Lowest possible use of external energy sources: Organic farming, for example, excludes the use of artificial fertilizers, the production of which consumes large amounts of energy. + Utilization of natural self-regulating mechanisms: Through diversified crop rotation, the promotion of beneficial animals and a vividly living soil as well as the use of suitable species and animal breeds diseases, pests and weeds do not become rampant. + Nourishment of the soils instead of the plants: Soil nutrients are activated through careful soil cultivation and the application of compost. + Fullest farming cycles possible: Farm waste products s compost or organic manure (dung, muck, animal slurry) are recycled; if possible, no additional agricultural supplies are purchased. + Protection of environmental resources: By taking all these principles into account, organic farming ensures a rather careful way of dealing with natural resources + Uniform Community rules: EU Regulation no 834/2007 and EU Regulation no 889/2008 with implementing rules for organic farming lay down the Community rules for the production of organic farming products (production, control, imports). Is Austria an environmentally friendly country? It thereby remains on a worldwide leading position for ecological construction and environmental technology. Austria is a favourable location for green clusters, in which companies have established a front-runner position on the global market of environmental technologies. How is Vienna Austria sustainable? Parks and local recreational areas at every turn — half the city is green space. Public transport in Vienna goes and operates everywhere. That's why one in every two Viennese makes use of it. Recycling and composting programs are top: 30% of the city's energy requirement is covered by renewable sources. Is Austria an agricultural country? Austria has the highest percentage of organically farmed agricultural land of all the European countries. In 2000 there were about 19 000 certified organic farms, or about 7 percent of all farms. Approximately 272 000 hectares were farmed organically. The average size of organic farms is 14 hectares. Austria's electricity supply Domestic generation has come very close to supplying the country's demand. In 2020, Austria registered a net import of electricity of approximately one terawatt-hour. Nonetheless, the country still recorded a trade value surplus that year of more than 200 million U.S. dollars Environmental technology from Austria is exported all over the world. The market shares of Austrian companies have also increased substantially outside Europe in recent years — particularly in North America, the Middle East, Asia and Africa.| Development of Austrian green-tech industry * Every new employee in the green-tech industry creates approximately two additional jobs in other industries
