Since it is night, the people are either illegaly trading or running from something. Either way,
they are trying to hide. Since the wagon is yellow, or gold, must mean that they were successful
in selling cows, which must have been a cheap but high income job since all they must do is
make sure the next generation of cattle are safely delivered and survive to be sellable. Perhaps
they are running because their method is starting to fall apart. The two people at the bottom of
the page look like they're talking, presumably gossip about the travelers.
”the drunkard”
The painting is predominantly yellow, red and blue, where a man in the blue suit was drinking
alcohol of some sort. His head is dislocated from his body meanwhile he is holding a knife in his
hand which leads to the belief that he cut his own head off. A pair of red slashes at the top half
of the painting may be reminiscent of blood. There is a table in front of him with a red bird on a
platter and a blue fish only on the table.
The story behind this is simple, as a man got too drunk, he lost motor control and accidentally
cut off his own head. Unless, however, since he is eating food, and since the bird looks strange
or fancy, he must be at a restaurant. More often than not dates are held at restaurants, so either
he git rejected or is trying to drown his sorrows. In the end the man used alcohol to try and
forget his problems and decided it was all too much and finished himself.
The man is sick for some-odd reason, and comes home to rest and read his book. A haze of red
covers his head like a veil. I'm not sure milk would help a disease so it leads me to believe that
the woman poisoned her husband. This is supported by her lifeless eyes.
”to my betrothed”
There is a humanoid in the center of the frame in red clothing and with a bulls head. Another
humanoid in black and wearing a large hat is lunged over the bulls shoulders. There is another
face in the top left that resembles more of a mask.
Betrothed means engaged, so the painting has some external purpose. I think it could be a love
setting, as the bull-person is lying down and in a seducing red gown. The mask to the side likely
means that they should put their public faces aside and see each other for who they really are,
no matter how ugly.
