On June 5, 1988, scientists warned the world’s leaders that they must act now to slow
the “greenhouse effect”, a rapid rise in temperature caused by the build-up of carbon and other
gases in Earth’s atmosphere. Instead of letting heat from the sun escape back into the space,
these gases form a barrier that traps heat. Unless nations act to slow this warming trend, the
Earth will warm so rapidly during the next century that sea levels will rise dramatically, resulting
in severe damage to ports and coastal areas. In low-lying countries like Netherlands and
Bangladesh, flooding will be more frequent and more severe. In Africa, countries that already
suffer from drought will become hotter and drier. More widespread famine is therefore likely.
Scientists insist that controls must be placed on processes that result in carbon dioxide by-
products. Worldwide preventive steps must be sought before the greenhouse effect gets out of
control.

The Poet and the Moth

Ahmad Qandeel

She came at dawn, a brilliant moth like light,

like the dawn of life, like my heart astray,
driven between two sorrows one open and one concealed.
She said, “With love’s wakeful eye, I saw your window still open at dawn
and the dim of your lamp still burning low like the fragments of a dream
I saw scraps of paper scattered on your bed
some scribbled over with unfinished lines like a bird about to take off;
And in the air of your room the echo of a melody
its tunefulness a rival to the lute”.
And I said: “This is where I want to dwell nearer to the solid earth.
Neighboring houses have locked me out
They are as dark as my dark fate
only you, poet, are here
poets of tears and rain.”
I said: “Welcome, my sweet little neighbor
I love you, moth, for what you signify.
You sacrificed your life for life’s rising tide
so that we never see its ebbing away.
Companion of light! In the whirling of your wings
Poetry is richer for your being
A ray of your spirit vies with the dawn
in the dream of the dawn’s bright tresses.”
She knew her enchanted universe I exclaimed:
‘Will you not then tell the world about me?’
