The ballad talks about a mariner that stops a wedding guest and start telling him a story.

The mariner says that on a sunny day he left with his crew and reached the Equator , but a storm brought
them to the south. They stop in the middle of the south pole. Suddenly they see an Albatros but the wind
starts blowing and they leave the Pole.

While the mariner is telling the story, the wedding guest notices that the man isn’t very happy and asks
why. The mariner reveals that he killed the Albatros and that he probably didn’t have to.

The ballad has a morality that is the passage from carelessness to sensitivity.
