CHEMISTRY (Part 2)

CHAPTER 6 (SHORT QUESTIONS)

1. Typical Transition Elements are those elements which show perfect characteristics of Transition
elements. e-g; Mn, Cr etc
Non-typical Transition elements do not perfect characteristics of transition elements. eg; Zn,Cd,
Hg

2. Cr has six unpaired electrons while Ag has only one unpaired electron

3. Number of ligands attached to central metal atom is called coordination number.

The neutral or negatively charged groups that are attached to the central metal atom in the
coordination sphere are called coordination ligands.

For example In K4[Fe(CN)6], coordination number of Fe is six, while CN - is coordination ligand.

4. Central metal atom or ion is the metal atom or ion that is present in coordination sphere to
which ligands are attached. For example In K4[Fe(CN)6], Fe is central metal atom

5. The neutral or negatively charged groups that are attached to the central metal atom in the

coordination sphere are called coordination ligands.

Ligand may be Monodenate, Bidentate or Polydentate if it shares one, two or more than two
electron pairs respectively.

6. Transition elements have variable oxidation states due to the involvement of d-electrons.

For example Mn can show variable oxidation states like +2,+4,+7 etc.

7. The Property of substance in which a substance is weakly attracted to strong magnetic field is
called paramagnetism. Eg; Mn
The Property of substance in which a substance is weakly repelled to strong magnetic field is
called Diamagnetism. Eg; Zn

8. The Property of substance in which a substance is weakly attracted to strong magnetic field is
called paramagnetism. Eg; Mn

The units of paramagnetism are Magnetic moment(µ)

9. Paramagnetism is due to the presence of unpaird electrons in orbitals.

Fe+3 and Mn+2 are considered as strong paramagnetic due to the prensece of 5 unpaird
electrons.

10.M.P and B.P of transition elements depend upon the number of binding electrons that increase
in 3d series upto the middle and decrease onward. Due to this reason M.P and B.P of 3d series
increase upto middle of the series.
