Mahsa Amini (2000, Saqaz) was a young Iranian woman arrested on September 13 by the

Moral Police while spending a few days with her family on vacation in Tehran (Iran) for
not wearing the Islamic veil well. It is known that the young woman went into a coma a
few hours after arriving at the police station and three days later her death was reported.

According to the Iranian government, Amina's death was due to an "unexpected"

cardiorespiratory arrest, statements collected by Iranian media such as Iran Wire or the Fars
news agency. But numerous human rights associations such as Hengaw or Haalvsh claim
that Amini was "brutal beating" by the Iranian authorities, which ended up killing the 22-
year-old girl.

Since Amini died, there have been numerous demonstrations as a sign of protest in different
parts of Iran. The images of the protests have flooded social networks. According to Vega,
Masha's death adds to the tiredness in Iran about the laws of clothing: in Iran it is
mandatory for women and girls to wear a veil.

World leaders at the UN General Assembly must support calls for the establishment of an
independent international investigative and accountability mechanism to address the
prevailing crisis of impunity in Iran. Their urgent need for action was demonstrated most
recently by the death in custody of 22-year-old Mahsa (Zhina) Amini, and the barrage of
gunfire unleashed on protesters which has left at least eight people dead and hundreds
injured, Amnesty International said today.
