SUBMISSION ID 548701399 CHARACTER COUNT 4452‘These days, globalization has become new buzzword in the world, as there are lots of
debates on this issue and in different contexts. The questions frequently arise whether the
benefits of globalization far outweigh its negative effects. “The Impact of Globalization
‘on the World's Poor’, by Thorbecke and Nissanke claim that globalization crucially
affects poverty in developing countries, and the study provides various authors’
viewpoints along with some examples. Another article “Globalization and Poverty:
‘Oxymoroa or New Possibilities?” by Hill and Rapp recommend some policies for
developing countties to utilize globalization as a tool to diminish poverty without any
biased view point on this issue
‘Thorbecke and Nissanke examine various aspects of globalization to identify its effects
fon poverty in developing countries. The authors claim that even though it has reduced
geographical barriers, it is widening the gap between developed and developing
countries. They also claim that while the world has benefited from the trade, the
developed countries have been gaining more benefits than developing countries. They
also suggest removing import restriction by developed countries and diffusion of
technology to minimize the widening gap among developed countries and developing
‘countries, Finally, the authors suggest that international agencies should contribute +0
strategies of eliminating poverty through financial, organizational and technical
assistance to the poor countries.“The impact of globalization on the poor’ is an extremely useful paper especially for
those who are interested to know about its effect on the developing countries. The
‘outlooks and generalizations of the article make it much clear and easier to readers, The
article focuses various transmission channels through which globalization affects on
oor, especially of developing countries. The article is less bulanced since greater part of
the discussion is focused on negative effects of globalization, In fact, the postive effects
are hinted in the introduction without fully developing the ideas in the main text. In
Addition, the article used few examples, and if there had been some use of graphs it would
have been much better for understanding the negative effects of globalization in diverse
sectors of developing countries. Besides, what kinds of data were used in different studies
are not well explained. Furthermore, a conerete summary based on all papers is still
missing.
‘Similarly, Hill and Rapp seek the ways how developing countries could inerease the
productivity and eliminate the poverty through globalization. The authors quote different
references and statistics to show the present circumstances of poverty, and how the
situation could he reversed or problem could be overcome. They draw an experience of
China and India which have succeeded by using the advantages of globalization. It is
also stated that globalization unlock the planet, and encourages the developing nations to
be productive. The writers also focus the radical changing pattem of indigenous exports,
‘earnings and living standards of developing countries that have improved significantly in
the recent years. The increment of Human Development Index value is used in the paperto demonstrate the progress of quality of life in both developed and developing countries
In fact, the ultimate goal of the paper to make understand that while globalization carries
some demerits; it opens the ways of new horizon that will provide lots of opportuni
improve their fortune.
Vill and Rapp's article on “Globalization and Poverty: Oxymoron or New Possibilities?”
delivers precise understanding on how developing countries could take the advantages of
elobalization to reduce their poverty. The article uses diverse references and statistics to
make it more clear and reliable, The authors explain all the keywords ofthe article, The
ticle identifies various policy options so as to overcome poverty that might be useful in
the context of globalization. However, in the beginning of the paper. authors discuss
both negative and postive effects of globalization. Perhaps, it would have been better if
the authors pointed out their opinion in this part clearly that would easier to readers to
‘understand authors’ views in the beginning. In addition, it would have been better for the
reader if authors had used some graphs to make the paper much more clear. Finally, the
authors fail to maintain consistency throughout the paper that makes the paper weak in
different perspectives.
In summary, both articles have good discussions on diverse aspects of globalization,
however, both have some limitations. The first paper might be helpful to understand the
fact regarding effect of different channels of globalization on poverty. However, it
provides only few examples which are less convincing for better understanding of this
phenomenon. The second paper tries to explain how countries can reap the benefit ofglobalization. However, it suffers from incoherent discussions in some places. Even
though both have some limitations they worth reading, and they would be even better if
they could include some more examples or could provide some visual explanations.
