The first man who proposed the idea of a monument in the United States was Edward de
Laboulaye. After 10 years, sculptor Frederic Auguste Bartholdi was commissioned to design a
sculpture that could be shown in the commemoration of the centennial of the American
Declaration of independence. This statue was called “LIBERTY ENLIGHTENING THE
WORLD” and was an effort between America and France.
Both countries had an agreement, where the American people were to build the pedestal, and the
French were responsible for the statue and its assembly in the U.S. But there was a problem, they
had insufficient money on both sides of the Atlantic Ocean. They used several methods to raise
funds to build the monument, such as: Theatrical events, public auctions, entertainment events,
art exhibitions and even a book called “The New Colossus” by Poet Emma Lazarus. They did all
they could to raise funds for the statue`s pedestal.
In order to complete the statue`s constructor, a well know engineer Alexandre Gustave Eiffel
(designer of the Eiffel Tower) was commissioned to design the massive iron pylon and
secondary skeletal framework which allows the statue`s cooper to move independently yet
upright.
