Sample Test 1
New Headway Plus- Pre-Intermediate
Unit 1
I. Reading: Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
We can communicate with other people in many different ways. We can talk and write, and
we can send messages with our hands and faces. There is also the phone (including the mobile for
chatting and text messaging), the fax, and e-mail. Television, film, painting, and photography can also
communicate ideas.
Animals have ways of exchanging information, too. Bees dance and tell other bees where to
find food. Elephants make sounds that humans can’t hear. Whales sing songs. Monkeys use their faces
to show anger and love. But this is nothing compared to what people can do. We have language-
about 6000 languages, in fact. We can write poetry, tell jokes, make promises, explain, persuade, tell
the truth, or tell lies. And we have a sense of past and future, not just present.
Radio, film, and television have had a huge influence on society in the last hundred years.
And now we have the Internet, which is infinite. But is this doing to us? We can give and get a lot of
information very quickly. But there is so much information that it is difficult to know what is important
and what isn’t. Modern media is changing our world every minute of every day.

I Reading: Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
It was 3 o’clock in the morning when four-year-old Russell Brown woke up to go to the toilet.
His parents were fast asleep in bed. But when he heard a noise in the living room and saw a light was
on, he went downstairs.
There he found two men. They asked him his name, and told him they were friends of the
family. Unfortunately, Russell believed them. They asked him where the video recorder was. Russell
showed them, and said they had a stereo and CD player, too.
The two men carried these to the kitchen. Russell also told them that his mother kept her
purse in a drawer in the kitchen, so they took that. Russell even gave them his pocket money - 50p.
They finally left at 4 a.m. They said, “Will you open the back door while we take these things
to the car, because we don’t want to wake Mummy and Daddy, do we?” So Russell held the door
open for them. He then went back to bed.
His parents didn’t know about the burglary until they got up the next day. His father said, “I

police caught the two burglars last week.

Unit 4
I Reading: Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
Bangkok, the capital of Thailand, is a city of contrasts. The tall glass buildings look like any other
modern city. But behind them is a place where life hasn’t changed for over 100 years- the canals. Built
in 1866 by the King of Thailand, these canals are home to many Thai people who still live and work
there today. There are four floating markets around Bangkok, and the oldest and most popular is in
the town of Damonen Saduak.
This market opens every day from 6:30 a.m. It’s best to shop early and go by water taxi. After 9
a.m. the tourist buses arrive, and it’s much too busy.
It’s a colourful, noisy, fascinating place. Old ladies with huge hats sit in small boats, filled with
tropical fruit and vegetables, fresh coconut juice and local food. Did you miss your breakfast? Then
just call a seller for a bowl of hot soup. He’ll get it from a cooker at the back of his boat!
But the boats don’t just sell food. Would you like a traditional hat? A silk dress? A flowered shirt?
Then just call and point. After the noise and excitement of the market, continue along the canal. Soon
you’ll see the wooden houses, orchards, and floating flowers of the canal villages. It’s a lovely,
peaceful way to finish your trip.

I. Reading: Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
Donna and Terry Flynn are the most famous married couple in the country. Donna is a pop star
while Terry is a football player. He has scored fifty goals for Manchester United, and has played for
England over thirty times. Together they earn about £ 20 million a year.
This is their story. Donna went to one of Terry’s matches because she liked him and wanted to
meet him. It was funny because she was not really interested in football, so when she met him after
the match, she didn’t know what to say to him. Terry was very shy. They just looked at each other
from opposite sides of the room. But he said to his mate, “She’s the one for me. I’m going to marry
her one day.” Fortunately, she came to another game, and they started talking then.
Although they are superstars, they haven’t changed. They are still the same people.
Newspapers have told terrible stories about them, but it’s all lies. Donna and Terry’s perfect Saturday
night is sitting in front of the telly with a take-away. Their favourite programmes are “Blind Date” and
“Friends”. People won’t find photos of Donna and Terry coming out of pubs and clubs drunk, having
spent the night with a whole load of famous people.
Most of the time, one of them is away. They really have to try hard to be together. They have
both flown all over the world just to spend a few hours together. People say,” Oh, you’ve got all this
money, what are you going to spend it on?” But the best thing, according to Terry, is that money buys
them the freedom to be together.

Unit 11
I Reading: Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
Did you know that a tiny piece of your hair gives us information about who you are related to,
which career you could be successful in, any crimes you have committed, what illnesses you could get,
how and when you could die?
This is possible thanks to the information in DNA (or deoxyribonucleic acid). Your hair and every
cell in your body contains your own unique DNA. It can tell you a lot about your family, health, and
personality.
DNA was discovered by a German scientist, Friedrich Miescher, in 1869, but nobody realized its
importance then. Other scientists thought that it was too simple to contain the map of how we are
made! In 1953, a group of British scientists at Cambridge University finally discovered the structure of
DNA and how it worked. They were given the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 1962.
Gradually, scientists learned to “read” more and more of the information in DNA. In 1986, for
the first time DNA testing was used by the police. Some DNA is usually left by a criminal at the place
where the crime was committed. This can be matched with DNA from a suspect. The test shows if the
suspect is guilty.
In 1990 the Human Genome Project was begun. Scientists wanted to make a map of the 3
billion chemical letters in human DNA. Over 1,000 scientists all over the world worked on the project,
and it took 10 years. With this information, it is possible that a cure for many diseases will be found in
the future. But it also brings with it many questions. Do we want to be able to choose what our babies
will look like, or pick the best person for a job with DNA tests?

Cathy Moorhead has only ever had only one job. She has never wanted to do anything but be in
a hot air balloon, going where the wind takes her, listening to the birds, and watching deer and small
animals below her.
And she gets paid for it, about £ 25,000 a year. “I’ve been flying balloons since I was 10, and I
have done it professionally for twelve years. I fly between 10 and 20 passengers in different balloons.”
The flights usually last an hour, and they go early in the morning or just before sunset. “The trips are
always mystery tours,” she says. “I never know where we’re going to land.”
She starts work about 6 a.m., and works anything from 15 hours a day to nothing, if the weather
is bad. “We can’t fly if it’s too windy, if visibility is poor, or if it’s raining. The balloon gets too heavy
and the passengers get wet.” What’s the best thing about the job? “The job itself. I love being out in
the countryside and I hate routines. So this is heaven for me.”

Unit 1
I. Reading: Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
I don’t believe that today’s wonders are similar in kind to the wonders of the Ancient World.
They were all buildings, such as the Pyramids in Egypt, or other architectural structures. Over the past
100 years, we have seen amazing technological and scientific achievements. These are surely our
modern wonders.
The Internet is everywhere. More than half a billion people use it, and the number of people who
are online increases by 100 million every year. In 1994 there were only a few hundred web pages.
Today there are billions. It has revolutionized the way we live and work. But we are still in the early
days. Soon there will be more and more interactivity between the user and the websites, and we will
be able to give instructions using speech.
In 1969, Neil Armstrong stepped out of his space capsule onto the surface of the moon and made
his famous statement: “That’s one small step for a man, one giant leap for mankind.” Since then, there
have been space probes to Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, and even to the sun. One day, a space observatory
will study how the first stars and galaxies began. So far, it seems that we are alone in the universe.
There are no signs yet that there is intelligent life outside our own solar system. But who knows what
the future holds?
Surely nothing has done more for the comfort and happiness of the human race than the
advances in health care! How many millions of people have benefited from the humble aspirin? How
many lives has penicillin saved? Average life expectancy worldwide has risen dramatically over the
past 100 years, from about 47 years in 1900 to about 77 years today.

I. Reading: Read the following passage then answer the questions below:
All over the world, children in hospital are being treated with a new kind of medicine: laughter.
Lucy is 23 and works for Theodora Children’s Trust. She is one of many clown doctors who bring a
smile to the faces of sick children.
Lucy calls herself Dr. LooLoo. She spends two days a week in children’s hospitals being extremely
silly with her friend and colleague Dr. Chequers. They make funny faces, tell jokes, and do magic
tricks. As we walk into the wards, Lucy blows bubbles, shakes hands with the kids, and makes up
nonsense songs for those children well enough to sing. Lucy and Dr. Chequers take special balloons
to make “balloon animals” and tell funny stories about them. They often meet kids who one week
look really sick, then they go back the next week and they’re racing about yelling “Hi there, Dr.
LooLoo! Hi Dr. Chequers!”
Lucy is naturally a very cheerful person. She has always been a clown. In fact her father’s a
clown and she started working with him when she was eight years old. She knew it was just the job for
her and she became a clown doctor because she thinks it’s a great way to cheer up sick, frightened
children in hospital. She wears a fancy coat, a yellow shirt, and tights with big stripes. Also, she has a
red rubber nose and wears her hair in crazy plaits.

Kevin’s ideal holiday has a little bit of everything. He likes lazing on the beach with a pile of
books, but then he gets bored and needs to do something. He likes exploring new places, especially
on foot, and nosing around in shops, museums, and restaurants. He is very into trying local foods.
However, he must confess that his favourite “holiday resort” is home. He travels so much in
his job that just waking up in his own bed is heaven. He potters around the house in his pyjamas,
reads the paper, does some gardening, shops for some food, then makes a delicious meal in the
evening and watches a film on TV.
He has three trips coming up. He is looking forward to going to Canada soon, where he is
staying for four nights at the Ice Hotel. This is a giant igloo situated in Montmorency Fall Park, just 20
minutes from downtown Quebec. It is made from 4,500 tons of snow and 250 tons of ice, and it takes
5 weeks to build. It will stay open for three months. When the spring arrives, it will melt. Then it will
be built again next year- maybe in a different place! Each room is supplied with a sleeping bag made

About forty years ago, Jean Giono was taking a long trip on foot over mountain heights
unknown to tourists. All around was barren and colourless land. Nothing grew there but wild
lavender.
After five hour’s walking, he had still not found water. All about him was the same dryness, the
same coarse grasses. He thought he saw in the distance a small black silhouette. It was a shepherd.
Thirty sheep were lying about him on the baking earth. He gave Jean a drink and took him to his
cottage on the plain.
Jean felt peace in the presence of this man. He asked if he might rest here for a day. He found
it quite natural- he gave Jean the impression that nothing could surprise him. Jean didn’t actually
need to rest, but he was interested and wished to know more about the shepherd.
Before going to bed the shepherd put a large sack on the table. From it he carefully removed
a hundred perfect acorns. Jean was curious. The next day when he went put with the shepherd into
the hills he discovered what the acorns were for.
Jean noticed that he carried for a stick an iron rod as thick as his thumb and about a metre
and a half long. He began thrusting his iron rod into the earth, making a hole in which he planted an
acorn: then he refilled the hole. He was planting oak trees.
