CORROSION RESISTANCE
CORE-TAPS (Metal [Al-Mg] spraying) protects metal parts from rust not only in offshore or bay areas but also in cold
regions where deicing chemicals (calcium chloride) are used.

【Consideration to test result】
The end of the service life of hot-dip galvanizing is assumed as the time when 90 % of the film is lost. It is defined in
“Durability Enhancement Technology of Iron Frame Construction” published by Gihodo Shuppan in 1986 based on the
assumption that iron surfaces start to corrode when only 10 % of the zinc film is left. The service life of hot-dip
galvanizing in coastal (salty) areas is 25 years. Hot-dip galvanizing lost its anti-corrosion resistance after 1,000 hours in
the test. 1000 hours being equivalent to 25 years, the acceleration factor of corrosion in the test is approx. 200 times.
The film formed by CORE-TAPS was kept sound even after 6000 hours. Accordingly, its service life = 6000 hours × 200 /
(365 days × 24 hours) = 137 years, during which time it would not corrode. CORE-TAPS was still sound after 6,000
hours, while hot-dip galvanizing lost its anti-corrosion resistance after 1,000 hours. In conclusion, CORE-TAPS is
considered to be more than 6 times as anti-corrosive as hot-dip galvanizing.

CORE-TAPS has 6 TIMES more Anti Corrosion Resistance than Hot-dip Galvanizing!

» Applicability to bearings (Acceleration Test with Bearing Structure)

The above salt water spray test used plates for test pieces.
However, bearings have more complicated structure, thus it is necessary to examine the certainty of application of spray-
ing and an influence from the complicated shape on the applicability. A combined-cyclic acceleration test was carried out
under highly corrosive environment using rubber bearing models.

【Test Outline】
Plating with Zn and Al, and spraying with Al-Mg were applied to test bearings.
As shown in the right picture, the test pieces were placed in two immersion
tanks and a dry room in turn at regular intervals in order to observe rust
occurrence.

【Test Result】
As seen in the pictures below, rust occurred on the test piece having the Zn film and was widespread. In the case of the
Al film, rust occurrence was found on the base metal, although it was not as much as the Zn film. For the Al-Mg film, some
areas got rust stains from the other test pieces when the test piece was immersed in the water tank; however, no rust
occurred on it. Thus, high anti-corrosive performance of the Al-Mg film was confirmed.
The pictures show much difference between the test bearings, but little difference between the plate test pieces (placed on
the test piece) in the three cases; that is, in order to make sure anti-corrosion performance of bearings themselves, it is
necessary to perform a test using production (complete) bearings.
