Aim:
I To get clarity about the Geography of Australia

Lesson 1 Provocation Video Mind map

Tasks:

 Provocation through Visuals

 Visuals of some important landmarks will be


displayed on the screen. Students will be provided
placards each giving description of the landmarks
shown. Each group will be asked to identify at least
one landmark based on the given descriptions on the
placards.

Description Placards
 Uluru is the largest single rock in the world. This oval shaped monolith is
located in the outback of Australia.

 The Great Barrier Reef houses the world’s largest coral reef system. It
stretches over 2,600 km/ 1,615 miles along the eastern coastline of
Australia.

 Tasmania an island of Australia is a great place for its nature walks, hiking
and biking are popular activities here. If you are very lucky, you might also
see the 'Tasmanian Devil', a small night-active mammal.

 Mount Kosciusko highest peak in Australia. The area around Mt Kosciuszko


is known as Australia’s winter sports region, with numerous slopes
attracting skiers and snowboarders.

 Sydney Opera House, opera house located on Sydney Harbour New South Wales,
Australia. Its unique use of a series of gleaming white sail-shaped shells as its roof
structure makes it one of the most-photographed buildings in the world.

 The kangaroo and emu are the national animals of Australia.

be the scribes to write down one point each about Australia on the
board. Rest of the class will note down the points in their copies.

Australia is the largest island and the smallest continent in the world.
It lies entirely in the southern hemisphere.
It is the only continent that has one nation.
Official name of Australia is the common wealth of Australia.
It is the sixth largest country in the world.
It also includes the island of Tasmania.
Australia was discovered in early seventeenth century.
Dutch captain Abel Tamsin reached the southern coast and discovered
the island now known as Tasmania in 1642
Captain James cook landed in Australia hoisted a flag and claimed it
for England and named it New South wales.
Jan 26 is celebrated as Australia’s national day
It is bordered by Indian Ocean in the west – Pacific Ocean in the east
and Southern Ocean in the south
Its land is divided in four regions Great Dividing Range, Central
Western coast and Tasmania
Highest peak is Mt Kosciusko in Great Dividing Range
The capital of Australia is Canberra
