Germany

Germany, officially the Federal Republic of Germany, is a country in Central Europe.


It is situated between the Baltic and North seas to the north, and the Alps to the south.

It covers an area of 357,022km2, with a population of over 83 million.

It is composed of sixteen federal states:


1. Hesse
2. Saxony
3. Bavaria
4. Bremen
5. Saarland
6. Hamburg
7. Thuringia
8. Brandenburg
9. Lower Saxony
10. Saxony-Anhalt
11. Schleswig-Holstein
12. Baden-Württemberg
13. Rhineland-Palatinate
14. North Rhine-Westphalia
15. Mecklenburg-Vorpommern
16. Berlin (capital and largest city)

It is bordered by:

 Denmark to the north


 Austria and Switzerland to the south
 Poland and The Czech Republic to the east
 France, Luxembourg, Belgium, and The Netherlands to the west.

Various Germanic tribes have inhabited the northern parts of modern Germany since
classical antiquity; a region named Germania was documented before 100AD.
In the 10th century, German territories formed a central part of the Holy Roman Empire.
In 1871, most of the German states unified into the German Empire, creating a nation-state.
After WWI and the German Revolution, the Empire was replaced by the Weimar Republic.
The Nazi seizure of power led to the establishment of a dictatorship and the Holocaust.
After the end of World War II, and a period of Allied occupation, Germany was divided into
The Federal Republic of Germany (West Germany), and The German Democratic Republic
(East Germany).
After the fall of communism, German reunification saw the former East German states join
the Federal Republic of Germany in 1990, becoming a federal parliamentary republic.
