This I Believe

Medical Professional and Patient

1. Paternalism and patient autonomy (The right to decide for one's self)

I believe if a person is and has a well, stable mental state they should be able to make
decisions for ones self. If a person is not thinking ractionally or doesn’t decide to pick the best
act of care for themselves, I believe that who ever has rights over that person should be able to
make decisions for them. I don’t believe if ones mental state is stable they shouldn't be able to
make decisions upon themselves

2. Truth-telling and confidentiality (as it relates to medical care)

I believe as a patient I would want to hear everything as the cold hard truth and I would
not want the doctors to run around with the answers and would not want them to hide the truth if
it was a life, death, or even a minor ordeal. I think if it’s my body I deserve the right to know
everything about it, even if it leaves me bothered and upset for a while.

3. Informed consent

I think having informed consent is very important. Sometimes people are so eager to not
have back pain or other painfully illnesses or injurys anymore that they will say yes so fast to any
surgery that could leave them paralyzed or even worse cause death. Some people make decisions
faster than knowing the consequences, and probably would have changed their minds if they
knew their consequences first off. It’s very important to me to know what other outcomes may
come into play based off of a opinion i decide to pick.

4. Human research (Conducting medical research on humans)

I think that conducting medical research on humans depending on the research is up to a

person. I personally have never done any type of study or research group but my significant other
has done one before and it was a week long study and he had a horrible time. He personally said
he wouldnt do it again and that it made him very sick and weak afterwards. We both have a close
friends who enjoys doing studys and helping the medical field come up with different answers

and solutions to issues and loves to help do research. I believe its okay for people to try and to
not try. I dont have a huge opinion on this topic but I know others might.

Life and Death

5. Abortion

This is a tough subject for many and I think my points change sometimes but for the most
I believe if its my body you do not get a say in what I want with my body. I feel as if we take
away abortions and women are stuck with having to go through their pregnacy it at times can be
dangerous for a mother, it can be a difficult time due to how the ended up pregnant. When a child
is born if the mother wanted an abortion but was unable to have one that child might end up in
foster care. There is a lot of children in foster care and I would rather have an abortion than put a
child in a home.

6. Reproductive technology (Egg and sperm donation, assisted reproductive techniques)

Gay marriage is very common and even cohabitaion is common and for some they want a
family but maybe can’t get pregnant due to certain relationship types and this is a way they can
carry a child and not have to adopt. Some women want to have children but not a relationship
and this is a safer way for them to become pregnant and know family history of diseases and
such better than a one night stand or asking a friend to do it. I believe this is a safe option for
people who have different relationships status’.

7. Genetic choices (Genetic engineering, genetic control)

I believe geneetic engineeing says that it can see and pick through DNA so that a child or
newborn does not end up with a genetic diseases but I beileve it doesn’t seem safe to mess with
ones DNA. We have all lived this long without messing with DNA why start now. I feel a lot
more complications will soon come with that as one changes and controls their genetics and
personally doesn’t feel nessesary to me.

8. Euthanasia and physician-assisted suicide

I belive its a humans right to call it quita when they are chronically ill and nothing works
to fix it such as cancers that are to far advanced and illness’s that may not be treatable. When a

person is beyond sick they feel they can no longer live life as they pleased the should have the
choice to pick if they would like a peaceful way out of all the pain and suffering they have been
through.

Justice and Health Care

9. Dividing up health care resources (How it should be provided based on age/status/ability

to pay, allocating scarce resources)

I believe there should be no such thing as dividing up care based on ability to pay. I do
see age coming into play though. I would like to think if a child to came into an ER for
something drastic we would treat them faster than maybe an adult who has stomach pains. I dont
think we should wait long to treat anybody based off anything but I know sometimes we triage
people based on level of pains. I would like to never seee someone not treated as faster for not
having insurance.

10. Pandemic ethics

I wasn't sure what this statement was asking for so I did some digging and what I came
up with was two ethical issues in healthcare we face due to pandemic ethics. One being wether to
respond due to risk involved and two how to distribute scarce, life saving medical resources. I
believe in triaging patients. I believe in the first issue as crappy as it is we signed up for the
medical field we do anything we can to help. Take extra precautions such as triple glove, wear a
hazmat suit, change in your garage when you get home, climb right into a shower. Take those
extra precautions so you don’t get sick as well. The second issues treat people based off who is
the most sick and who is willing to get that help and resources. Some people wished to not get
extra help while in the hospital speak with those people and families about DNR’s. Check people
who have little symptoms and get them help and get them away from people who are extremely
sick.

11. Race, racial bias, and health care

I live my life not based on the color of skin I am or others but by how much knowledge I
have and they have. I treat people based off of severity of injuries or pain/chief complaint not by
the color of someones skin. I can’t say for everyone that this is how we all are. I know some

people will disagree with this and treat based off skin colors but I dont see people based off skin
tones. I know this is a issue in the world but in my person book it could never be an issue or
problem.
