FINDINGS: -

A major part of every person's life is spent at his/her workplace where he strives for a better lifestyle. A
healthy environment is very important for the success of an individual as well as the firm he's working
for. Nowadays as the world is progressing rapidly people are forgetting basic moral principles which is
the main reason of making this world chaotic. Your daily work life becomes more stressful when you
work in a poisonous atmosphere. We all experience unpleasant weeks or even days at work. When
asked in survey career coach Eli Bohemond describes toxic workplace environment by saying, It’s an
environment that makes you feel “psychologically unsafe,” A toxic workplace is marked by obstacles
including managers pressuring staff to focus on particular projects, a communication gap between staff
and management etc. Due to which the individual gets no space for showcasing their creativity and
innovation. Islam has a set of basic rules and regulations for employer and employee to run their affairs.
Prophet Mohammad (Peace be upon him) practiced and also taught these people during his time. He
founded a society where employer and employee enjoyed benefits of these basic rules. Even after 1400
years these basic rules still exists as milestone not only in Muslim nation but also adopted by many other
nations and organizations.

Business has been emerged from the necessity of mankind. In primitive society, men fulfilled their
necessities through mutual exchange of commodities. One had a kind of commodity while others had
different kinds of commodities. So, they exchanged them with each other which is well-known as Barter
system. However, it was not effective for long. It was also not possible to exchange goods for goods
because of gradual increase of man’s diverse needs and demands. Human beings started to produce
goods for making profits instead of exchanging goods. So, they introduced some measurement such as
the rare snail, the oyster, the stone and so forth for exchange of goods. But it was not also effective for
long. Later metallic coins, bank-notes etc. were used for the exchange of goods. In this way, business
activities gradually have been advanced.

In business, there are different categories of people one has to respond to: shareholders, creditors,
customers and clients, employees, dealers, vendors, suppliers, government and society as well as
international companies and organizations. So, business persons should abide by some rules and
regulations for their dealings. Herein the question of ethics is involved in business. It needs principles,
ideal codes of conduct, rules and regulations. In this regard, a discipline named Ôbusiness ethics’ was
established by ethicists, moralists, economists, academicians and philosophers. It has definite subject-
matter, principles, standards and methodology. Islam, as one of the major religions of the world, has its
own way of dealing with the business-related issues. In this paper an attempt has been made to explore
Islamic attitude, principles and rules and regulations regarding business.

SOME PROBLEMS OF BUSINESS ETHICS

WORKPLACE ENVIRONMENT:
A comfortable environment must be provided to every worker working in a firm. Islam emphasizes on
the rights of humans such as the basics are safe work place, food, drink and uniforms at the time of work
must be provided, Prophet Mohammed said: “Food Drinks and Cloths are the right of people working
under you”.

A toxic work environment is one where negative behaviors such as manipulation, bullying, yelling, are so
inherent in the culture of the organization that a deficient productivity, a lack of trust, high stress levels,
favoritism, discrimination and negative usage of power or seat become the norm. There are multiple
factors that leads to decline in progress of any organization.

FACTORS AND THEIR REMEDIES IN THE LIGHT OF ISLAM:

A burnout work culture can be brought on by a number of factors, including low employee recognition,
favoritism, unhealthy communication, rumors, and frequent turnover.

Such problems are unavoidably present in a hostile workplace every day. It can lead to a variety of
problems, including disagreement, low morale, excessive stress, unfavorable outcomes, illness, high
employee turnover, and even abusive behavior.

Islamic rules and regulations for employer and employee falls in four category that can be beneficial in
eradicating the toxic environment

•Common rules and regulations for both employer and employee:

This rule is very important to ensure peace and prosperity of any organization at all levels.

•JUSTICE AND FAIR DEALING:

Employer needs to ensure justice by fulfilling his responsibility or duty to the employee and employee
needs to ensure justice by fulfilling his responsibility to employer. Allah said:

“O YOU WHO BELIEVE STAND FIRMLY FOR JUSTICE”

(Quran: Surah 4 Verse 135)

Judgment should be honest and impartial; no matter rich or poor, employer or employee, General
Manager or a cleaner.

Prophet Mohammed (Peace be upon him) said:

“The people before you were destroyed because they used to inflict the legal punishment on the poor
and forgive the rich”

(Albukari, Volume 8)

•EMPLOYMENT CONTRACT:

Employment contract between employer and employee must be made and agreed by both party before
starting the job.

Allah warned in Quran," FULFILL YOUR AGREEMENT, SURELY, YOU WILL BE QUESTIONED ABOUT IT”
(Quran: Surah 17, verse 34)
•SECURITY:

Employer must protect employee from hardships by giving his wages on time and providing security of
job. Employee must protect his company from all losses and hazards.

Allah Said:

“LET THEM ADORE THE LORD OF HIS HOUSE WHO PRIVIDES THEM FOOD AGAINST HUNGER

AND SECURITY AGAINST FEAR (DANGER)”

(Quran Surah 106, verses 3&4)

Cheating and deception from both sides are not allowed in Islam. Allah Said:

“WOE TO THOSE THAT DEAL IN FRAUD, THOSE WHO WHEN THEY HAVE TO RECEIVE BY MEASURE FROM
MEN, EXACT FULL MEASURE. BUT WHEN THEY HAVE TO GIVE BY MEASURE OR WEIGHT TO MEN GIVE
LESS THAN DUE”

(Quran: Surah 83, Verses 1 to 7)

•RESPECT, DIGNITY AND KINDNESS

It is the duty of employer to ensure the respect and dignity of employees irrespective of their position.
Allah has always glorified hard-working men and promoted hard-earned money. Prophet Mohammed
(peace upon him) said:

“I worked as shepherd for small wages”

And warned about disrespectful behaviors by saying

“One who mistreat those under him will not enter Paradise "

•HONESTY:

Employee must not neglect his work nor harm employer whether he sees or not.

Allah said:

“DO DEEDS! ALLAH WILL SEE YOUR DEEDS AND (SO WILL) HIS MESSANGER AND THE BELEIVERS. AND
YOU WILL BE BROUGHT BACK TO THE “ALL KNOWER” OF UNSEEN AND THE SEEN. THEN HE WILL
INFORM WHAT YOU USED TO DO”

(Quran: Surah 9: Verse 105)

He must stay extra cautious about the cleanliness of his workplace. Prophet Mohammed (peace be up
on him) said:

“Cleanliness is half of the faith (Iman)”

•Main purpose of business:

In early times, it was said that the business of business is business. That means, the only motto of
business was to make profit. Nowadays, the idea of business has been changed. The idea of social
responsibility has been conjoined profit- maximization amid continuing debates for and against the
generation of profit in business. Some people think that making profits are the only business of business
while others hold the view that business activity should engage more than mere profits. (vide, for
details, Satris, 234-249) Undoubtedly, business is profit-oriented enterprise. But Islam significantly
presents different implication by business. It refers business to latent purpose of human life. The life
after death is final, permanent and eternal according to Islam. So, this worldly life is less important than
life after death. A person wants to achieve final goal in his/her life hereafter through all activities in this
worldly life. For this reason, earning livelihood or making profit only is not his/her main target through
business. S/He wants to earn livelihood and do business but s/he does not want to lose a little thing in
life hereafter. That is why he loves Allah, the Almighty, and the akhirah (the life after death) more than
his business.

Giving priority and supremacy of life after death does not mean that the earthly life is valueless and
adversary to mankind. Islam only discourages absolute concentration on wealth. It suggests that man
will run earthly activities but never will forget his Lord and the life after death. Man will govern his
earthly deeds in accordance with his Lord’s commands by following the Holy Quran and the sunnah (the
way) of the prophet Muhammad (PBUH). The Quranic indication regarding earning wealth, leading
earthly life is reflected in the following verse. Allah said: But seek, with (the wealth) which God has
bestowed on thee, the home of the hereafter nor forget thy portion in this world: but do thou good, as
God has b een good to thee, and seek not (occasions for) mischief in the land: for God loves not those
who do mischief in the land. (Al Quran, 28:77)

of life. If he does it according to the command of his Lord, he would be considered to be successful
person and the purpose of his business will be a service for the betterment of his fellowbeing and the
community and won’t be harmful for the society.
