Introduction

There has been a relatively large growth in the function of emotional intelligence in
student achievement and the relevance of their emotional adjustment in school in
education. Many scholars claim that when children approach adulthood, they will
need to develop new abilities in emotional understanding, decision making, social
interaction, and conflict resolution. As a result, being a clever and dedicated
student is not enough to attain life success. Emotional intelligence is the capacity
to recognize and manage one's own emotions as well as understand the emotions
of others(2011-2022, 2022). A high Emotional intelligence aids in the development
of connections, the reduction of team tension, the resolution of conflict, and the
enhancement of job satisfaction. This essay will adopt an insightful strategy to
examine exactly what is emotional intelligence, and furthermore give a detailed
explanation why does emotional intelligence matter in the classroom. It will then give
brief discussion about What EI skills did Mr. Clark displayed in the movie The Ron
Clark Story. Furthermore, it will give a brief emotional intelligence self-reflection
about Ron Clerk movie. Lastly it will conclude by giving an overview of significant
points discussed and give my brief opinion when emotional intelligence is
explored.

What is emotional intelligence

Consider a world in which you couldn't tell when a buddy was unhappy or when a
classmate was upset. It is crucial to be able to express and manage our own
emotions, but it is also necessary to be able to comprehend, interpret, and respond
to the emotions of others. Emotional intelligence (EQ) is the capacity to perceive,
use, comprehend, and control emotions in constructive ways to reduce stress and
communicate successfully (Pisanos, 2011). According to studies on emotional
intelligence, emotional intelligence is a significant driver of exceptional performance
in both individuals and organizations. Raising people's self-awareness and
knowledge of others helps them realize their full potential and increases their
effectiveness, connections, and leadership capabilities. Emotional intelligence is all
about identifying, comprehending, and controlling our subconscious or emotions.
Emotions are sometimes seen as illogical or "non-intellectual" sensations beyond our
control. Emotions, on the other hand, are complex states of mind and body made up
of physiological, behavioural, and cognitive responses to stimuli that may be
regulated and directed1. The primary building blocks of emotional intelligence are
self-awareness and self-knowledge. We can regulate and convey sentiments more
constructively if we are conscious of our emotional condition. In 1990, phycologist
Peter Salovey and scholar John D. Mayer invented the term "Emotional Intelligence"
(EI) to describe "the ability to monitor one's own and other people's emotions, to
distinguish between emotional states and label them in an appropriate manner, and
to use emotional information to guide thinking and behaviour" (Salovey and Mayer
1990). This is frequently defined as one's capacity to detect and comprehend one's
own behaviours, moods, and urges and conduct them to best react to the
requirements of a certain setting (Kasapi & Mikiotis, 2014).

Why does emotional intelligence matter in the classroom?

What students learn in school may have a long-term impact on them, moulding them
into the individuals they will become. A good education should not only prepare
students for future universities and occupations, but it should also enable them to
express and manage their emotions in healthy ways. Learning the alphabet,
numbers, and fundamental math abilities are vital in preschool and kindergarten, but
so is healthy socializing (Emotional Intelligence in the Classroom: Why We Need it
and Tips to Develop It - Dignitas, 2022). Children begin to engage with their
classmates at this age and learn how to behave in their presence. Group projects
educate kids as they become older how to collaborate and use each member's
talents to complete a single assignment. Emotional intelligence (EI) is, of course, a
talent that is developed throughout a lifetime and never fully develops, but becomes
stronger in different ways. As a result, instructors may cultivate their own EI
alongside their pupils. Teachers may exercise their own emotional intelligence (EI)
and educate their pupils how to acquire EI by displaying vulnerability. Teachers, for
example, can notify learners when they are frustrated and engage in a discourse
with them using "I" statements. Then they may inform their kids what they are going
to do to deal with the circumstance positively. This enables pupils to see the process
of identifying, expressing, and managing their emotions. Students can also learn that
experiencing emotions, even those perceived as "negative," is not a bad thing. It also
provides pupils with realistic examples of how to regulate their emotions. There are
two possible explanations for the link between emotional intelligence and superior
academic achievement. For starters, emotional intelligence assists students in
dealing with emotions in the classroom. Students may be apprehensive about tests,
dissatisfied with low results, irritated when they work hard but do not accomplish
their goals, or bored when the subject matter is uninteresting. Students benefit from
being able to manage their emotions so that they do not interfere with their learning.
Second, emotional intelligence can assist children in maintaining connections with
educators, peers, and family members. Maintaining deep personal ties allows kids to
call on friends and teachers for assistance when they are struggling, to learn from
others in group work, and to seek emotional support from others.

Emotional intelligence skills did Mr. Clark displayed in the movie ‘The Ron
Clark Story’.

The Ron Clark Story is a film based on actual events about a sixth-grade teacher
who goes to Harlem, New York, in the hopes of improving his pupils' education and
life. The film displays a few of Ron Clark's attributes that are genuinely great in a
teacher as it chronicles the first year of his teaching position at Inner Harlem
Elementary School. Clark's first action (even before his first day of class) after being
hired into his new post was to do house visits and meet the families of his pupils. As
educators, we understand the necessity of a dual-capacity framework for student
achievement, but the extent to which most educators are prepared to go to facilitate
these family-school collaborations frequently fall well short of home visits(The
Triumph (TV Movie 2006) - IMDb, 2022). Developing positive relationships with our
kids' families should be a key concern in building an atmosphere conducive to their
development.

Ron Clark's other admirable emotional intelligence attribute, as seen in the video,
focus on his teaching method. On the first day of class, he declares, "We are a
family," and soon after, "We respect each other." While academics should be the
focus in the classroom, it is impossible to deliver effective education in a classroom
when students and teachers do not respect one other. I feel it is critical to foster
mutual respect in the classroom. This not only improves the studying atmosphere,
but it also teaches pupils vital life skills that will help them become worthy members
of society. Aside from Clark's basic regulations, it is worth noting that he adopted
tactics such as positive reinforcement from the start. When one of his students
adjusted their conduct in a favourable way, he immediately praised that kid(Film
Analysis, 2022). Clark also abstained from punishing his pupils; instead of issuing
detentions or punishments when kids were purposely rude or involved in violence, he
was more interested in determining why the student was misbehaving so that he
might try to improve it. This is a tried-and-true approach for changing behaviour.

Clark also went out of his way to make learning pleasurable for his students. He
employed student-centred techniques, incorporating comedy, music, and art into his
academic program, to engage and push children to study (Amazon.com, 2022).
None of these techniques, however, would have been effective if he had not been
consistent and persistent. Ron Clark made certain that each of his courses was
interesting for his students based on their own interests. He was constant in giving
positive and constructive criticism to his pupils, and he did so in a way that fostered
mutual respect in his classroom. He was always willing to help his students and their
families. These are the characteristics I intend to incorporate into my own teaching
approach. Clark's methods are undoubtedly effective since his pupils continue to
profit from them to this day. None of these techniques would have worked if he
hadn't been consistent and persistent. Ron Clark made certain that each of his
courses was interesting for his students based on their personal interests. He was
constant in giving positive and constructive criticism to his pupils, and he always did
so in a way that fostered mutual respect in his classroom. He was constantly
available to his students and their families. These are characteristics that I intend to
incorporate into my own teaching approach. Clark's approaches are undoubtedly
effective since his pupils continue to profit from them now.

Brief Self-reflection on emotional intelligence about Ron Clerk movie

Ron Clark is the sort of teacher that I aspire to be one day. His tale exemplifies how
to ensure that no pupil is forgotten or left behind. He went above and beyond what
other people consider to be the duties of a teacher. He did not work from 8 a.m. to 4
p.m. and then leave. He worked hard to develop methods to engage his pupils in
ways that would make learning enjoyable for them. He also worked with them on
their homework outside of class. Students do not always learn on the first try and
being able to find an alternative approach to communicate the knowledge is
important. If students are to succeed, this is a must. His vision of the classroom as a
family may appear to be a simple concept, but many of his pupils have never had a
family, or have had a negative experience with one (Yusuf and Pattisahusiwa, 2020).
This demonstrates how a basic concept may have a variety of interpretations for
kids. It takes him some time to persuade his students of the importance of family.
Working on personal relationships with each of them is one way he works toward this
aim. He attempts to find out what they enjoy, detest, hope for, and dream for. This
enables him to customise his teachings and provide appropriate encouragement to
each learner. These gestures enable him to establish trust, which ultimately helps
him win over the pupils.

Conclusion

The Emotional Quotient of human being, being an independent organism, feels a

variety of emotions. It is obvious that it is caused by the human brain, which is
hardwired to respond to situations in daily life with feelings such as pleasure
because of a good work, rage because things didn't go as planned, and despair
because of judgements. We have roughly given evidence in support of the above
statement. We have done so by defining emotional intelligence and explored
reasons why emotional intelligence matters in a classroom. We went further to
examine why emotional intelligence matter in the classroom and also pinpointed out
the emotional intelligence skills that were apparent in the Ron Clark movie. Lastly we
