Translation
"I salute the One-who is the lamplight that· brings auspiciousnes. prosperity, good health,
abundance of wealth, and the destruction of the intellect's enemy.

Brief · Explanation
This p_rayer is chanted before lighting the lamp. Light is considered a symbol of
auspiciousness, prosperity; and abundance in many cultures. Light brings with it .
brightness, but how· does it "destroy the intellect·s enemy"? The intellect's enemy is
considered to be .ignorance; its ·arch-enemy is self-ignorance. Ignorance is likened ·to
darkness; knowledge is likened to light. A.room may be full of objects and one's sight
may be sharp, but if the room is ·in-darkness, the objects canp.ot be perceived. Light
·removes the darkness and makes it-possible to see the objects. In the_ same manner, the
self (subject) is ever-present in one's experiences. bu:t,_ due· to ignorance, its essential
nature is unknown. As light removes darkness, knwledge of the self removes ignorance
( and allows one to discover happiness as the essential nature of the self.

Sanskrit to English Word Meaning

brahma - Brahman; arpaQ,am - the means of offering; brahma - Brahman; havii - oblalio11;
brahmagnau - unto the fire that is Brahman; brahmaia - by Brahman; hutam - is offered;
brahma - Brahman; eva - indeed; tena - by him; gantavyam - to be reached; braluna-!wrma
samadhina - by the one who is abiding in Brahman
Translation
Any means of offering is Brahman, the oblation is Brahman, the fire in which the offering is n1adc
is Brahman, the one who offers is also Brahman. Indeed Brahman is gained by such a person who
abides in Brahman.
Brief Explanation
This verse from the Bhagavad Gltii (Chapter 4, verse 24) is commonly chanted before meals.
Brahman is the name for the Lord, the cause of the whole creation. Looking at the whole creation as
an effect, Brahman is seen as the cause of everything. The effect does not exist separate from its
cause. For example, a golden chain (effect) does not exist separate from gold (its cause). In fact,
from the standpoint of its reality, the 'chain' is only a name given to a particular fom1 of gold; what
is, is only gold.

AUMKAARAM BINDU SANYUKTAM (PRAYERS ON AUM THE SOUND SYMBOL OF GOD)

AUMKAARAM BINDU SANYUKTAM, NITHYAM DHYAAYANTI YOGINAHA

KAAMADAM MOKSHADAM CHAIVA AUMKAARAYA NAMO NAMAHA

MEANING:-

THE YOGIS (WISE MEN) ALWAYS MEDITATE ON THE AUMKARA WITH THE DOT OR BINDU.
WE BOW DOWN TO THE AUMKAARA (A SOUND SYMBOL WHICH REPRESENTS GOD-THE
ETERNAL ONE) WHO GRANTS OUR DESIRES AND GIVES LIBERATION FROM THIS CYCLE OF
BIRTH AND DEA TH.

WHY DO WE PRAY TO THE SYMBOL OF GOD?

AUM IS A VERY POWERFUL SOUND AND SYMBOL. AUM IS CALLED AN AALAMBANA-A

SYMBOL WHICH REPRESENTS THE UNIVERSAL GOD. SO BY JUST RECITING THIS SLOKA
OR PRAYER, YOU ARE SEEKING THE BLESSING OF GOD IN EVERY FORM. THE BINDU OR
DOT REPRESENTS THE INDIVIDUAL OR JIVA ATMA AND THE REST OF THE SYMBOL
REPRESENTS THE FORMLESS GOD. THE ENTIRE SYMBOL SHOWS THE UNION OF THE
INDIVIDUAL WITH GOD. DURING MEDITATION ONE WOULD CONTEMPLATE ON AUM AND
THE ETERNAL RELATIONSHIP.

Japennama Thrayam Nithyam Maharoga Nivarinam

Shiva (husband of Balambal), is the Lord of all doctors. He is the remover of

all diseases and health problems. If we say this prayer thrice a day, even the
most terrible diseases will be removed.

Aadharam Sarva Vidhyaanaam Hayagreevam Upaasmahe.”

Mantra meaning:
”We worship or meditate upon, Lord Hayagreeva, who is the embodiment of wisdom or
divine knowledge (Gyaana) and blissaanandam (aanandam), who is the base of all
vidyas, whose body is radiant emanating brilliant white light like that of a blemish less
Spatikam.”
