The 7.3L 2V Dual Equal Variable Camshaft Timing (DEVCT) is a V-8 engine with the following features:
Overhead valves (two valves per cylinder)
In-block camshaft
Push rod/rocker arm design valve train
Dual Equal Variable Camshaft Timing (DEVCT)
SFI
Aluminum cylinder heads (high airflow cylinder head intake and exhaust ports)
Cast iron, 90-degree V-cylinder block
Forged steel crankshaft
Variable displacement oil pump

Always refer to these labels when installation of new parts is necessary or when checking engine calibrations. The engine parts often differ within a
CID (cubic inch displacement) family. Verification of the identification codes will make sure the correct parts are obtained. These codes contain all

the pertinent information relating to the dates, optional equipment and revisions.

The engine valve train consists of overhead valves operated through a single in-block camshaft with roller lifters, push rods and rocker arms.
Placing the camshaft in the block reduces the engine height, width and weight.

ptOudC.tOud,OHiODundIOEgAOvodxiEiyldfpC,Ixw
Variable camshaft timing is of the dual-equal type where the exhaust and intake are phase shifted equally. the system is capable of advancing or
ag

retarding the camshaft timing up to 50 degrees.

htnudksgonE
The engine fuel system uses Port Fuel Injection (PFI) to deliver fuel to each cylinder. Fuel is delivered under pressure to each cylinder bank
i

through a common rail manifold. The fuel is then injected into each intake port to mix with air before passing through the intake valve into the
rd

cylinder.

A variable displacement oil pump provides more oil when needed, and can reduce parasitic losses under light loads. The oil cooler is mounted on
the side of the oil pan. Jets mounted in the block direct a stream of oil directly into channels in the pistons to aid in engine cooling.

NOTICE: During engine repair procedures, cleanliness is extremely important. Any foreign material, including any material created while cleaning gasket
surfaces, that enters the oil passages, coolant passages or the oil pan, can cause engine failure.
NOTE: During engine assembly it may become necessary to check bearing clearances and end play. Refer to Section 303-00.
1. Record the main bearing code found on the rear of the engine block.

m
2. Record the main bearing code found on the rear of the crankshaft.

co
n.
i ag
rd
ca
3. NOTE: This Main Bearing Select-Fit Chart is continued in the next step.
Using the data recorded earlier and the Main Bearing Select-Fit Chart, determine the required bearing grade for the main bearings.
1. Crankshaft main bearing code / Maximum crankshaft journal diameter.
2. Engine block main bearing code / Minimum block bore diameter.
Read the first letter of the engine block main bearing code and the first letter of the crankshaft main bearing code.
Read down the column below the engine block main bearing code letter and across the row next to the crankshaft main bearing code letter, until the 2 intersect.
This is the required bearing grade for the No. 1 crankshaft main bearing.
As an example, if the engine block code letter is "J" and the crankshaft code letter is "F", the correct bearing grade for this main bearing is a "2".
Repeat the above steps using the second, third, fourth and fifth letters of the block and crankshaft codes to select the No. 2, 3, 4 and 5 bearings.
