ON-VEHICLE INSPECTION
1. REMOVE FRONT WHEEL
(a) Using a dial indicator, measure the looseness near the center of
the axle hub.
Maximum looseness:
0.05 mm (0.00197 in.)
NOTICE:
Ensure that the dial indicator is set at a right angle to the
measurement surface.
(a) Using a dial indicator, measure the runout on the surface of the
axle hub outside the hub bolt.
Maximum runout:
0.03 mm (0.00118 in.)
NOTICE:
Ensure that the dial indicator is set at a right angle to the
measurement surface.

REMOVAL
HINT:
Use the same procedures for the LH side and RH side.
The procedures listed below are for the LH side.
(a) Remove the bolt and disconnect the brake tube bracket from the
steering knuckle.
(b) Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect the disc brake caliper from
the steering knuckle.
NOTICE:
Do not disconnect the flexible hose from the disc brake caliper.
Do not twist or bend the flexible hose.
(a) Using a screwdriver and hammer, remove the axle hub grease
cap.
NOTICE:
Do not damage the axle hub.

(b) Remove the axle hub and dust cover from the steering knuckle.
(b) Using a plastic-faced hammer, tap out the front drive shaft from the front axle hub.
NOTICE:
Be careful not to damage the drive shaft boot.
(c) Remove the axle hub and dust cover from the steering knuckle.

DISASSEMBLY
NOTICE:
Do not allow foreign matter, etc. to contact the ABS rotor bearing.
(a) Using SST and a hammer, release the staked part of the
adjusting nut.
SST: 09930-00010
(b) Install a nut to the front axle hub, and fix it in a vise.
(c) Using SST and the L-type handle, remove the front wheel
adjusting nut.
SST: 09602-60010
NOTICE:
Do not damage the threads of the hub bolts.

INSTALLATION
HINT:
Use the same procedures for the LH side and RH side.
The procedures listed below are for the LH side.
NOTICE:
Do not damage the O-ring.
(c) Install the dust cover and axle hub to the steering knuckle with
the 4 bolts.
Torque:
99 N·m {1010 kgf·cm, 73ft·lbf}
NOTICE:
Do not damage the O-ring.
(c) Connect the front drive shaft to the front axle hub.
NOTICE:
Be careful not to damage the front drive shaft boot.
(d) Install the dust cover and axle hub to the steering knuckle with
the 4 bolts.
Torque:
99 N·m {1010 kgf·cm, 73ft·lbf}

NOTICE:
Be sure to perform this work for a new drive shaft.
Keep the threaded parts free of oil and foreign objects.
Torque:
338 N·m {3446 kgf·cm, 249ft·lbf}
(c) Install the front wheel adjusting lock cap and a new cotter pin.
NOTICE:
Make sure to securely fit the bearing to the axle hub.
(a) Connect the front disc brake caliper and install 2 new bolts.
Torque:
99 N·m {1010 kgf·cm, 73ft·lbf}
NOTICE:
Do not twist the flexible hose.
Make sure that the bolts are free from damage and foreign
matter.
Do not overtighten the bolts.
(b) Connect the brake tube bracket to the steering knuckle with the
bolt.
Torque:
29 N·m {296 kgf·cm, 21ft·lbf}

REPLACEMENT
HINT:
Use the same procedures for the LH side and RH side.
The procedures listed below are for the LH side.
(a) Using SST and a screwdriver or equivalent to hold the axle hub,
remove the front axle hub bolt.
SST: 09650-17011
NOTICE:
Do not damage the threads of the hub bolts.
(a) Temporarily install a washer and hub nut to a new hub bolt as
shown in the illustration.
NOTICE:
Install hub nuts to prevent damage to the hub bolts.
(b) Using a screwdriver or equivalent to hold the hub, turn the hub nut until the bottom surface of the hub
bolt head touches the axle hub.
NOTICE:
Do not damage the threads of the hub bolts.

HINT:

(b) Using a screwdriver or equivalent to hold the hub, turn the hub nut until the bottom surface of the hub

REMOVAL
HINT:
Use the same procedures for the LH side and RH side.
The procedures listed below are for the LH side.
(a) Disconnect the brake tube from the flexible hose with union nut
wrench while holding the flexible hose with a wrench.
NOTICE:
Do not bend or damage the brake tube.
Do not allow any foreign matter such as dirt and dust to enter
the brake tube from the connecting point.
(a) Remove the 2 bolts and disconnect rear disc brake cylinder.
NOTICE:
Do not twist or bend the flexible hose.
Do not disconnect the flexible hose from the disc brake cylinder.

(a) Remove the 4 nuts and rear axle shaft together with the parking
brake plate.

Be careful not to damage the axle housing hole.

DISASSEMBLY
1. REMOVE REAR AXLE SHAFT SNAP RING
(a) Using SST and a press, press out the rear axle shaft.
SST: 09521-25011
SST: 09521-60010
(b) Remove the rear axle bearing inner retainer from the axle hub.
(c) Remove the rear axle shaft washer from the axle hub.
(d) Grind the rear axle bearing inner race surface using a grinder,
then remove it with a chisel.

Do not use any nuts removed from the vehicle, as they may be

(b) Using a hammer, remove the 4 housing bolts and rear axle hub and bearing.

(b) Remove the deflector and deflector gasket from the rear axle shaft.

INSPECTION
1. INSPECT REAR AXLE SHAFT
(a) Using a dial indicator, measure the rear axle shaft runout and
flange runout.
Maximum runout:
Shaft runout
1.50 mm (0.0591 in.)
Flange runout
0.05 mm (0.00197 in.)

REASSEMBLY
NOTICE:
Do not allow foreign matter, etc. to contact the ABS rotor bearing.
(a) Install a new deflector gasket and deflector to the rear axle
shaft.
HINT:
Align the 2 oil drain holes.
(d) Removed the washer and nut from each hub bolt.
NOTICE:
Make sure to securely fit the bearing to the parking brake plate.

(a) Install the washer and a new retainer to the axle hub as shown
in the illustration.
NOTICE:
Install the washer with its tapered surface facing downward.
Install the retainer with its chamfered surface facing downward.
(b) Using SST and a press, press in the rear axle shaft.

1. INSTALL REAR AXLE SHAFT OIL SEAL

Do not allow foreign matter, etc. to contact the axle shaft housing hole.
(c) Install the rear axle shaft and parking brake plate with the 4
nuts.
Torque:
60 N·m {612 kgf·cm, 44ft·lbf}

(a) Connect the rear disc brake cylinder and install 2 new bolts.
Torque:
95 N·m {969 kgf·cm, 70ft·lbf}
NOTICE:
Do not twist the flexible hose.
Make sure that the bolts are free from damage and foreign
matter.
Do not overtighten the bolts.
(b) Using union nut wrench, connect the flexible hose to the brake
tube while holding the flexible hose with a wrench.
Torque:
without union nut wrench -
15 N·m {155 kgf·cm, 11ft·lbf}
with union nut wrench -
14 N·m {145 kgf·cm, 10ft·lbf}
HINT:
Use a torque wrench with a fulcrum length of 30 cm (11.8 in.).
NOTICE:
Do not bend or damage the brake tube.
Do not allow any foreign matter such as dirt and dust to enter
the brake tube from the connecting point.

knuckle.

(a) Using a screwdriver and hammer, tap out the retainer cap.

INSTALLATION
HINT:

(a) Using a brass bar and hammer, tap in a new retainer cap.
NOTICE:
The retainer cap is a non-reusable part.
Do not damage the retainer cap.

NOTICE:
The oil seal is a non-reusable part.
Do not damage the steering knuckle oil seal.
Torque:
110 N·m {1,122 kgf·cm, 81ft·lbf}
HINT:
If the holes for the clip are not aligned, tighten the nut up to another 60.
