4-Bit Binary Adder and Subtractor

The document describes constructing a 4-bit binary adder and subtractor circuit using ICs 7483 and 7486. The adder performs addition when the control line is 0, and the subtractor performs subtraction using 1's and 2's complement methods. For subtraction using 1's complement, the B inputs are inverted. For 2's complement subtraction, the B inputs are inverted using an EX-OR gate. The circuits were tested and truth tables verified various input combinations.

4-BIT BINARY ADDER AND SUBTRACTOR (subtraction using 1’s & 2’s complement)

Aim:

a) To construct a 4-bit Binary Adder using IC 7483 & IC 7486.

b) To construct a 4-bit Binary Subtractor using 1st & 2nd complement using IC 7483 & IC
7486.

Components required:

Bread board, DC power supply, IC 7483, IC 7486, wires and multimeter

Formula:

Sum= A+B; Control line→0

Difference= A-B; Control line→1

Pin configuration :

IC 7483
IC 7486

Circuit diagram: For adder and subtraction by 2’s complement:

For subtraction by 1’s complement:

Procedure:

The circuit is constructed using IC 7483 and IC 7486. A & B are the two four bit inputs and
carry (s4) out, s3, s2, s1, s0 the five bit output. The B inputs are connected as one of the inputs of four 2-
input EX-OR gates. The second input of all the four EX-OR gates are connected together and taken as
control line. The control line is also connected to C in i.e. input carry. When the control line is zero (0),
the circuit performs addition operation. When the control line is one (1), the B inputs are inverted and the
circuit performs subtraction by 2’s complement method (in the first circuit).

For only subtraction operation, we give A inputs as it is and B inputs are inverted and given using EX-OR
gate. Now the B input given is the 1’s complement of the actual inputs given. Then they are added using
the 4 bit adder. To end around a carry, the c out is connected to c in. This type of connection performs
subtraction using 2’s complement.

For the subtraction by 2’s complement, the inputs B0 to B3 are given through EX-OR gate for getting
the 1’s complement of B. Then the two four bit numbers A0 to A3 and B0 to B3 are added. The circuit
connections are made us shown in the second circuit diagram.

The truth table for adder and subtractor are verified for various inputs.

Observation:

ADDER:

Addition: Sum= A + B; Control line→0

A3 A2 A1 A0 B3 B2 B1 B0 S4 S3 S2 S1 S0

SUBTRACTOR:

Difference= A – B; Control line→1

1) By 1’s complement:

A3 A2 A1 A0 B3 B2 B1 B0 D3 D2 D1 D0
2) By 2’s complement:

A3 A2 A1 A0 B3 B2 B1 B0 D3 D2 D1 D0

RESULT:

The 4-bit binary adder and subtractor was constructed and tested for various input combinations.
