A pleasant evening to everyone, My name’s Tresha and I’m to going discuss Global and

National Situation in Occupational Safety and Health.

But before we begin our discussion allow me to have a recap or review about Occupational
Safety and Health.

What is OSH?

Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) deals with all aspects of health and safety in the
workplace and has a strong focus on primary prevention of hazards. Its goal is to prevent
accidents and harm to people from work-related activities.

Why is OSH relevant to business?

Research has shown that safety and well-being at the workplace equals good business and
profitability. Employers have primary responsibility for the occupational safety and health of
workers. They are responsible for conducting risk assessments and organising business
operations with safety as the first priority. To enable employers to provide flexible solutions to
manage workplace safety.

Alright, moving on to our main topic National and Global Situation of Occupational Safety and
Health.

OSH is regulated at international, regional and national levels. Safety and health in the
workplace does not just apply to typically dangerous jobs, such as working at height or with
chemicals, but to all places of employment, including offices. Nonetheless, OSH laws and
regulations also include the requirement of employers to adapt work and the workplace to the
capabilities of the workers in light of their physical and mental health.

As we have all noticed, manufacturing, construction, transportation and storage are the industries
that experience the highest level of work-related accidents. In these highly hazardous sectors —
as elsewhere — work-related injuries are not equally distributed among the workforce.
The workers most exposed to work-related injuries are those in precarious employment
(temporary, casual or part-time workers), workers in informal employment, those working in
small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), and work performed by groups subject to
discrimination and marginalization (such as migrant workers, young workers and racial and
ethnic minorities).

Subsequently, each year, an estimated 2.78 million workers die from occupational accidents and
work-related diseases while an additional 374 million workers suffer from non-fatal occupational
accidents. This means 7,500 people die from unsafe and unhealthy working conditions every
single day.

So, In April 24 of 2013, the Rana Plaza building collapsed, killing 1,132 people and maiming
more than 2,500 others. This tragedy became a symbol of the fashion industry’s impact and need
for sustainable reform. It reveals the absence of universal employment injury protection schemes,
which leave victims and their dependants without any financial, medical or rehabilitation
support.

Current Challenges in Global and National Occupational Safety and Health

Many countries have developed laws and enforcement activities, working conditions for the
majority of the world’s workers do not meet the minimum standards and guidelines set by the
World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labor Organization (ILO).

OSH regulations cover only about 10% of the population in developing countries. These laws
omit many major hazardous sectors like agricultural and domestic work, typically not considered
“industries.” The informal sectors typically include more sensitive subpopulations in the
workforce like child labor, pregnant women, and the elderly, with limited access to health care.

Only 5% to 10% of workers in developing countries and 20% to 50% of those in industrialized
countries have access to adequate occupational health services.

Let’s have an example, in the Philippines, image: a construction worker finishes painting a wall
in Filinvest, Muntinlupa City, Philippines
Occupational accidents and diseases cause human suffering and loss. Their economic cost is
high, with some 2 million workers dying each year from work-related accidents and diseases,
and the figure is on the increase in spite of efforts to make inroads.

The Philippine Government estimates that 2.2 million Filipino workers in medium and large
enterprises enjoy effective occupational safety and health (OSH) protection and services. In other
words, 17 of 18 persons in the nation’s workforce of 38.8 million do not benefit from acceptable
working conditions.

In conclusion, OSH is crucial as it promotes a harmonized global community where the

protection of workers is universally guaranteed.

In which the right to a safe and healthy working environment is respected at all levels, where
governments, employers and workers actively participate in securing a safe and healthy working
environment through a system of defined rights, responsibilities and duties, and where the
highest priority is accorded to the principle of prevention.
