ASSIGNMENT QUESTION

The objective of the assignment is to relate educational leadership practices with selected
case studies and research.

PART 1: JOURNAL ARTICLE REVIEW (20%)

Review the following journal article on ‘Instructional Leadership: Its Role in Sustaining
School Improvement in South African Schools’,

Conduct an in-depth interview with 2 (TWO) principals at any school/institution to address


the following research objective/research question:

To assess the pressing challenges that principals face in their instructional leadership.

Research Question:
What are the pressing challenges that principals face in their instructional leadership?

In your report, you need to include the following elements.

1) Key informants profile: detail the profile of these two key informants to be written
descriptively (NOT in a table form)

2) Qualitative data analysis: Analyse the in-depth interviews descriptively and
narratively in the qualitative method by themes. Include the mixture of direct
speech/reported speech. The theme should be at least FOUR themes. Please note that it is
NEITHER in a dialogue/conversation form NOR raw data (transcription). The following is the
sample of your report should be.

PART 3: ONLINE CLASS PARTICIPATION (10%)

This part requires students to participate actively in the MyINSPIRE eforum. Discuss the
following topics in the forum and submit proof of your participation with your tutor and
peers in the eforum online discussions:
1. Discuss the difference between the functions of management and leadership.
2. Discuss Locke and Latham’s Goal-Setting Theory and how the theory can be used to
motivate teachers in schools.
3. Some people contend that most charismatic leaders are ineffective. Do you agree
with them? Discuss.
4. What is the relationship between ‘attribution theory’ and ‘achievement’?
5. What are the benefits of bureaucracy?
