Igp-Small Scale Organic Ginger Production
Igp-Small Scale Organic Ginger Production
A. Technical
1. Substrate – Manure mixed with humus of rice straw will be used for growing
ginger. This will be packed in a used sack. At the start, the sack should be 25% filled
with the substrate and will be added with the substrate gradually as the plant grows
taller.
2. Rhizome – left-over ginger rhizomes from home or from the local growers will
be solicited from parents and local growers. Be it come from the native variety or hybrid.
Only fresh and viable rhizomes will be selected from the sources.
4. Planting and maintenance - One week before planting the rhizome, the
substrate will be sterilizedby burning plenty of straw, or dried leaves of banana and
coconut over it about 3 times. After another week, the substrate will be packed in a used
sackmaking sure that the sack does not hold water when it rains. Substrate must be 1 ft.
high in each sack.
4. Harvesting - Ginger is ready to harvest when the leaves turn yellow and begin
to wilt, about 8 months after planting. Harvest ginger only when it is mature enough. In
harvesting, dig every hill with the help of a fork, then pull up the plant, shake off the soil,
and lay them on the ground. The branches and leaves may be cut off but take care not
to hurt the crops. While harvesting, segregate the ginger according to variety and size.
Put in containers so as not to hurt them.
B. Market
The marketability of ginger in the locality is expected to be high because of limited
number of growers of the product. According to survey, there are only 3 farm owners
cultivating an aggregate area of around 3 hectares of ginger in the Barangays of
______________, _____________ and __________. Nevertheless, buyers do not feel
the abundance of the product because the price remains as high as 40.00 to 60.00
pesos per kilo in whole sale. Since the project starts with a micro scale of only one
hundred sacks, the immediate market outlet will be the whole sale buyers and direct
consumers within the barangay of ___________. In the future, production is expected to
rise; hence, marketing strategies and expected outlets shall be thoroughly examined.
When there will be surplus volume of production that cannot be bought by the
usual clients, products will be advertised and sold to the neighbouring Barangays of
__________ and __________or at ________________ in __________ City during
Market day.
Should there be good promise for Ginger marketing, ginger growing will
continuously be increased and shall cover to a larger space in school premises.
The project will be managed by the school’s science club organization through Mrs.
Fhebe S. Selorio as the adviser and will be supervised by the school principal..
Marketing will be done by the science club members and generated funds will be
deposited to the Science Club’s Bank Account. The administration of the project will
follow the structure below
