INCOME GENERATING PROJECT PROPOSAL

I. PROJECT SUMMARY INFORMATION

Project Title : SMALL-SCALE ORGANIC GINGER PRODUCTION

Project site : (Name and Address of School)

Proponent : (Name and Position/Designation)

Contact Person : (School Principal)

Target Beneficiary : All students in (Name of School)

Total Project Cost :0

Source of Funds/Materials : In-kind Logistics

Duration : Two Planting Season (2 years)

II. RATIONALE

With the growing miscellaneous needs in school, there is a need to initiate an

income generating project. Thus, organic ginger production is proposed to augment
some school financial sources. The conduct of this project is seemed to be feasible
since the needed materials are readily available in the community with no cost and the
market demand for ginger is high at all season.

Ginger (Zingiberofficinale Rosc.) is popularly known as luya, luy-a, and kabasi

inthe Philippines and is grown as an important spice crop. Ginger production has
demonstrated to provide viable sources of food and income to growers locally and
abroad. A small scale plantation in school’s backyard could be an asset. So, growing
ginger organically is highly proposed and persuaded by the proponent.

III -PROJECT OBJECTIVES

Generally, the project aims to establish a small-scale organic ginger production

for income generation.

Specifically, it seeks to:

1. showcase small-scale production model in school to be replicated in the

household;

2. generate funds to augment financial sources needed in the procurement of

materials for the improvement of the School’s Science room.

3. purchase of worthwhile materials for the enhancement of teaching-learning

process.
IV. PROJECT OPERATIONAL DESCRIPTION

A. Technical

1. Substrate – Manure mixed with humus of rice straw will be used for growing
ginger. This will be packed in a used sack. At the start, the sack should be 25% filled
with the substrate and will be added with the substrate gradually as the plant grows
taller.
2. Rhizome – left-over ginger rhizomes from home or from the local growers will
be solicited from parents and local growers. Be it come from the native variety or hybrid.
Only fresh and viable rhizomes will be selected from the sources.

3. Climate and Humidity - Ginger requires a warm temperature (29-35 degree

Celsius) and a humid climate for growth. It also requires a distinctive pattern of rainfall
of at least 150 to 200 cm during the growing period and no rainfall a month prior to
harvest. The space at the back of the science room will be utilized since it fits the
required humidity for ginger to grow productively.

4. Planting and maintenance - One week before planting the rhizome, the
substrate will be sterilizedby burning plenty of straw, or dried leaves of banana and
coconut over it about 3 times. After another week, the substrate will be packed in a used
sackmaking sure that the sack does not hold water when it rains. Substrate must be 1 ft.
high in each sack.

4. Harvesting - Ginger is ready to harvest when the leaves turn yellow and begin
to wilt, about 8 months after planting. Harvest ginger only when it is mature enough. In
harvesting, dig every hill with the help of a fork, then pull up the plant, shake off the soil,
and lay them on the ground. The branches and leaves may be cut off but take care not
to hurt the crops. While harvesting, segregate the ginger according to variety and size.
Put in containers so as not to hurt them.

B. Market
The marketability of ginger in the locality is expected to be high because of limited
number of growers of the product. According to survey, there are only 3 farm owners
cultivating an aggregate area of around 3 hectares of ginger in the Barangays of
______________, _____________ and __________. Nevertheless, buyers do not feel
the abundance of the product because the price remains as high as 40.00 to 60.00
pesos per kilo in whole sale. Since the project starts with a micro scale of only one
hundred sacks, the immediate market outlet will be the whole sale buyers and direct
consumers within the barangay of ___________. In the future, production is expected to
rise; hence, marketing strategies and expected outlets shall be thoroughly examined.
When there will be surplus volume of production that cannot be bought by the
usual clients, products will be advertised and sold to the neighbouring Barangays of
__________ and __________or at ________________ in __________ City during
Market day.
Should there be good promise for Ginger marketing, ginger growing will
continuously be increased and shall cover to a larger space in school premises.

C. Organization and Management

The project will be managed by the school’s science club organization through Mrs.
Fhebe S. Selorio as the adviser and will be supervised by the school principal..
Marketing will be done by the science club members and generated funds will be
deposited to the Science Club’s Bank Account. The administration of the project will
follow the structure below

IV. MECHANICS AND IMPLEMENTATION

Pre-implementation
1. Make a survey on the local growers of gingers including the fluctuation
of possible ginger marketability.

2. Conduct a meeting of the Science Club organization in school and

reveal the plan to the during the PTA assembly meeting.

3. Write a proposal and a letter of request for the conduct of the IGP.

During Implementation

1. Ask donations from parents/students/ community growers for the

rhizomes and the substrate.

2. Assigned science club officers and members for the preparation of the
substrate, planting and maintenance of the plant every afternoon after
the last period for 10 minutes.

Post Implementation
1. Manage the organization in the selling of the product.

2. Open a savings account for the Science Club organization for proper
keeping of the funds.

3. Use the generated fund as to its purpose following the rules and
regulation for disbursement.

V. EXPECTED OUTPUT

Basic Assumptions:
Production per sack per year (100 sacks)
1st year: 50 kilos 2nd year: 100 kilos
Price per kilo of Ginger = 40.00
Projected summary of Gross Sale of Products : Php 6000.00
