2 Release Notes
February 2022
Welcome to the Lean Portfolio Management 5.1.2 course!

In the spirit of relentless improvement, we regularly update and maintain our courses.
This document contains the updates for this version of the course.

5.1.2 General Course Improvements


• General course improvements include updated graphics, redesigned PowerPoint
layouts, and corrected typos, grammar, and punctuation and updated links.
• Added slide numbering to the lower right corner for slide location reference. This
allows the trainer to easily reference a slide to the learners and for reference
when submitting feedback.
• Updated the new slides throughout the course to highlight resources available on
the SAFe Community Platform to help SAFe® Practitioners succeed in their role
and ensure they meet the same standards as other SAFe Courses.

Lesson 1 (Introducing Lean Portfolio Management)

• Slide 1-12: Added Activity: Your Class Page Learning Assets to get learners
acquainted to the class page.

introduced in this lesson.

Lesson 2 (Establishing Portfolio Strategy and Vision)


• Slide 2-30: Fixed the table to reflect the correct numeral values based on the Epic
article from the Framework.
• Slides 2-5, 2-15, 2-18,2- 20, 2-21, 2-22: Added Collaborate Templates links for
learners to use in the future.

Getting Started with Lean Portfolio Management workshop


We added a new version of the optional Lean Portfolio Management Workshop on day
three of class. This version of the workshop is a significant update repositioning the
workshop for the audience of change agents who implement LPM and provides them with
guidance to prepare to kick off the implementation with stakeholders.

Note: LPM is still considered three days of content -it is two days of class with an optional,
but highly encouraged, Day 3 workshop.

The workshop was significantly updated in this version, incorporating success patterns
from LPM implementations in different industries. Updates include:
• Reframed the target audience and purpose to: For change leaders, SPCs,
coaches, members of the APMO or LACE to prepare for the SAFe Lean Portfolio
Management (LPM) kickoff event.
• Added the workshop slides to the course workbook.
• Provided instructor enablement videos for facilitating the workshop portion of the
class.
• Added slide notes to help the instructor facilitate the new material and activities.
• Added workshop activity templates to the course Virtual Classroom in Collaborate.
• Introduced new topics and guidance: A more detailed drill down of the LPM
implementation roadmap.
• New guidance to establish the case for change and incorporate Agile Change
Leadership.
• An updated activity for defining the portfolio scope.
• New guidance on LPM participant responsibilities.
• New guidance for preparing stakeholders with empathy interviews.
• An updated activity for designing the LPM events.
• New guidance to establish a volunteer based LPM Community of Practice (CoP).
• New guidance to facilitate an LPM Kickoff event with stakeholders. New scenario-
based guidance to prepare the change agent to anticipate common challenges
with LPM implementation.
• New guidance for preparing the Finance function for the LPM implementation.
• New post workshop homework, for the change agent to complete immediate next
steps that enable them to start the LPM implementation.
• Introduced a new type of slide called Practice Tips, which shares field experience
notes.
